Ozzie Guillen: “we suck”

May 4, 2011, 4:05 PM EDT

Ozzie Guillen AP

Ozzie Guillen was Ozzie Guillen in his pregame availability a few minutes ago.  And, as is always the case, there was a refreshing lack of polish in his comments about the tail-spinning White Sox. Brett Ballantini of CSN Chicago reports:

“I’m not making any excuses: We suck … Maybe our players don’t feel the same way, but we do. We care about this ballclub. Every time we lose a game [the coaches feel like] we fail … Our salary sucks. The only reward we have as coaches is winning … Every day you have to go out and fight, go and fight like a man. That’s why a lot of coaches drink, smoke, have ulcers. I don’t have any of those. This week, I haven’t even touched a beer yet.”

I’m not sure if the part about not touching a beer yet means that he’s so calm that he’s not driven to drink or if it means that he’s so upset that he’s been too occupied to drink.

I’m concerned about “yet”. This may imply that Ozzie is about to go on a public bender that we may never forget…

  2. Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - May 4, 2011 at 4:08 PM

Where’d my comment go? Whuh? anyway….I meant to say….I am afraid of the word “yet” as it implies that Ozzie is about to go on a public bender that we may never forget…

    • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 4:19 PM

The more I read your comments, I have realized that you are a waste of space as a poster. You never bring anything remotely interesting to the table as a poster. I think you are more worried about the amount of thumbs up/thumbs down that you see than any substance.

      • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - May 4, 2011 at 4:34 PM

        D to the nozzle!

    • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - May 4, 2011 at 4:23 PM

Now you’re on to something. Have you prepared yourself for this? Only because I’ve been waiting all season for you. Stick around, my friend, this will only get more fun.

      • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 4:53 PM

I’ll tell you what. Let’s wait until this weekend, when your Braves come into Philadelphia. Your team will face Lee, Oswalt, and Hamels. Lucky for the Braves, they will miss Doc Halladay. After we spank the Braves in that series, why don’t you talk to me.

      • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - May 4, 2011 at 5:45 PM

The Braves will take all three, duh. And if they don’t, I’ll bring my A-game regardless. This isn’t about the Braves and the Phils or even about the awesome braves fans and the poo-breathing Phils fans. This is about cake, pie, other assorted desserts, you stealing your name idea from Utley’s Hair and then spelling biceps wrong, and finally, it’s about entertaining our dear HBT universe.

  3. halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 4:17 PM

You know what, this guy is a disgrace to the game of baseball. He should not be a MLB manager. I’ve been saying this for the last few years. If I were the owner of the White Sox, I would have fired Guillen and his enabler, Ken Williams a couple of years ago.

The White Sox, like the Mets, are no different. You have to cleanse a clubhouse of people that have a fatalistic approach. You need positive leaders, not like this scumbag.

Even though I’m a Phillies fan, I do not relish in demises of organizations like the White Sox and the Mets because I’m a baseball fan, first and foremost. This is just pathetic. If I were a fan of the White Sox. I would be calling for his head because he does not care anymore.

If it was Philly, we definitely would be calling for his firing.

    • Manni Stats - May 4, 2011 at 4:21 PM

Can you prove he doesn’t care anymore? He’s always been like this, and under his watch they have been a really successful franchise, including delivering a WS. I would not label them as teh greatest organization, but its pretty cohesive from Reinsdorf down to the players. They are having a bad month and Ozzie mouthed off, I don’t see how this is any different from the past.

      • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 4:26 PM

The guy has shot off his mouth on a continual basis. I’m not going to take the time to pull up all of the bs comments that he has made the several years. They delivered a WS in spite of this guy, which was great for the city of Chicago.

The bottom line is that most baseball fans are sick of hearing this guy and his bs comments. He has thrown his players under the bus, as well as the organization in the past. As a baseball fan, it’s time for him to go.

If I was a White Sox fan, I would have called for his ouster a few years ago.

      • Manni Stats - May 4, 2011 at 4:48 PM

Not a Sox fan but I live in Chicago, so I’ve heard it all. Yet nothing he’s done ever seems to have had any tangible effect on the field, and the players hold solidarity with him. I don’t think there’s a problem outside of the Sox substantially underperforming.

      • Alex K - May 4, 2011 at 5:00 PM

Haladaysbiceps- What you’re failing to see is the players and fans LOVE Ozzie. Plus, from all accounts, Reinsdorf thinks of Ozzie like a son.

      • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 5:16 PM

Alex K, if the fans of Chicago love Ozzie Guillen, they must be on dope.

All I’m telling you is that this would not fly in Philly.

What happen Chicago, somebody snip your stones? You used to be a good and knowledgeable sports town, but what this disgrace known as the Guillen is saying is acceptable?

      • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - May 4, 2011 at 5:51 PM

You can talk trash about the Braves all you want b/c there’s trash to talk about. On the other hand, trashing Chicago???? Chicago wipes itself with Philly in every way…nightlife, shopping, sports teams, fans, bigger nuts, pizza, scenery, coastline, schools, beer, pie, cake, women, and the list goes on. Take your pick b/c Chicago has owned Philly since we stole your World’s Fair.

      • Alex K - May 4, 2011 at 9:32 PM

        Honesty doesn’t work there?

    • benyamen - May 4, 2011 at 4:27 PM

“The White Sox, like the Mets, are no different” … except for that whole having won a World Series as their manager thing right? Other than that whole winning a championship unlike most “great” managers that haven’t had a sniff at a title he sucks I guess.

      • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 4:36 PM

You misunderstand me. The White Sox need a change for the sake of that clubhouse. Guillen is a disgrace with his detrimental comments towards his players and organization. WS a few years back, however great, does not negate this.

Let me put it this way. If you were the owner of the White Sox, would you continue to put up with this clown of a manager?

      • Old Gator - May 4, 2011 at 5:47 PM

If I were the owner of the White Sox, I would give Ozzie a lifetime contract that would make a Supreme Court justice jealous. I would do anything to make sure that he never wound up managing for our arch-rivals, the Feesh. Anything. I mean, their division is right next door to ours, you know? Ozzie is like my accountant: he just knows too much.

  4. Jonny 5 - May 4, 2011 at 4:36 PM

Oh, he’s drinking alright, and picking some weeds in the back yard and smoking them too if he thinks we didn’t see right through that horrible attempt to cover the fact that he has now been driven drink, and smoke, as he said.

    • Utley's Hair - May 4, 2011 at 4:57 PM

He has mastered the art of drinking beer without ever touching it…and he does it a lot.

  5. IdahoMariner - May 4, 2011 at 5:01 PM

I enjoy (from afar) Ozzie’s comments — but if he thinks his salary sucks, or even those of his other coaches, can I have it? I want a salary that sucks as bad as his.

  6. cur68 - May 4, 2011 at 5:13 PM

For the record; I like Ozzie [Expletive] Guillen. He’s a great baseball guy, loyal to his players, cares about winning, always colorful, and hates that his team sucks. His boys just got no-hit by a guy who only struck out 2 hitters and has never shown the slightest sign of pitching a complete game before. His comments are pretty much in line with what I’d be saying in his shoes. His players like him, his management likes him and you won’t catch Ozzie [Expletive] Guillen asleep on the bench. He’s kind of the Mark Cuban of managers. He puts a$$e$ in seats, attracts media attention to his team and does his best to field a winner. If he got a job managing the Blue Jays their wouldn’t be so many damn empty seats every time those guys play. You go have that beer Ozzie [Expletive] Guillen. You done earned one by now.

    • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 5:18 PM

Dude, I thought you were a baseball man. I guess I had that wrong. You have no clue, honestly.

    • Panda Claus - May 4, 2011 at 5:36 PM

I agree with most of what you said.

Frankly how can anyone give Ozzie grief on this? He’s right about his team, they do stink. My O’s beat them three out of four with one of the worst bullpens in the league and a fairly anemic offense.

Two days ago this site was reporting about possible Liriano trade talks, then he goes out and throws a no-no against the Sox?

      • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 5:43 PM

Here’s the point. How can you give Ozzie grief?

You never, as a manager, ever throw your players under the bus, no matter what. The players don’t like that. The manager looses the clubhouse and they tune him out.

I’ll let you in on a little baseball secret: MLB managers are only really responsible, wins/losses, for +/- 5 wins a year, on average. The players dictate the results on the field.

But, when you have a jackass manager like Guillen, it’s easy for these players to quit and tune him out.

        Now, do you get it?

      • Panda Claus - May 4, 2011 at 7:14 PM

OK, I get your point. As a fan, I enjoy the honesty this guy speaks. Sometimes I agree, he’s probably too honest to be helpful. He’s either trying to motivate his team through public means, or he’s about to give up. Neither would surprise me.

      • Lukehart80 - May 4, 2011 at 7:39 PM

“The players don’t like that.” Where is your evidence that White Sox players don’t like Guillen? As someone who lives in Chicago, I’d say the clear impression is that most of his players have really enjoyed playing for him.

Bicepts, congrats on making a name for yourself amongst the readers here at HBT. If that was your goal, you’ve succeeded in a very short time. I doubt you care, but you come across as obnoxious and overbearing.

You criticize the harmless asides of others (longtime regulars at that) as “wasting space” and then post and reply repeatedly making the same basic points over and over.

You call others “clueless about baseball” when you don’t agree with their ideas and opinions, but insist on staying here to debate with them.

You’re welcome to find a baseball site with more enlightened readers and spout your wisdom there instead. Please.

    • cur68 - May 4, 2011 at 6:13 PM

bicepts; You are really trying to bite off more than you can chew. You’ve already got El Bravo preparing his douchenozzle summary for you. Craig has given you his nod for dumbest comment on this blog. You sound like one of the few loud a$$, classless Philly Phans that gives all the other Phans a bad name. You’ve had to back pedal on more comments than Dan Quail at a spelling bee. You’ve switched from pie to cake and gods alone know where you stand on ice cream. Don’t get me started on the whole errant ‘t’ thing. Now you wanna jack with what I have to say about Ozzie [Expletive] Guillen?

      Homey please.

  7. deathmonkey41 - May 4, 2011 at 5:54 PM

I’m not a White Sox fan, but I am an Ozzie fan. It is refreshing to have a manager that actually says what he’s thinking. It’s his way of motivating his players and hey- the dude’s won a World Series. That makes him equal with the great Bobby Cox, no?

    • halladaysbiceps - May 4, 2011 at 6:12 PM

You’re a fan of a manager that does not manage you team?????

I liked your Donger comment in regards to Choo. But, your clueless when it comes to baseball.

      • dluxxx - May 4, 2011 at 7:34 PM

It’s kind of funny to see someone who’s made absolutly no reasonable argument in any comment I’ve seen them post (pre and post corrected moniker) tell someone they know nothing about baseball. Thanks for the laugh. I’ll follow El Bravo in the D to the N comment. Troll…

  8. thebigwhitecat - May 4, 2011 at 10:46 PM

    Thanks for 2005, Ozzie.

Now go touch a beer. You suck, too.

  9. kiwicricket - May 4, 2011 at 11:49 PM

Ok…confession time. I just went through the entire comments just to put ‘hands-down’ on ‘Bicepts’ posts. Childish I know, but I can’t tease him in real life now can I.
