Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly has some exciting news for those anxiously awaiting the return of Phillies second baseman Chase Utley.

According to Salisbury’s sources, Utley has been deemed “ready to intensify his workouts” and will head to the Phillies’ spring training complex in Clearwater, Florida on Friday to begin playing in extended spring training games.

Once the Phillies have seen enough from Utley in the exhibition tilts, they will have him meet up with the organization’s Florida State League affiliate for true live action games. Then he’ll move on through the Phils’ minor league system before eventually meeting up with the big league club.

If all goes according to plan, Utley should be back in the majors by the end of this month.

The All-Star second baseman has been sidelined since spring training with patellar tendinitis.

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was that a little much? I still say he should sit for as long as possible—maybe even early to mid June. The Phightins need him for the playoff push.

      I concur.

Agreed. Let him come back in June so he can be in mid-season form by Sept. and Oct.

I don’t think Amaro would be dumb enough to bring back Utley if he wasn’t 100%.

But, I’m with everyone when I say I’m nervous he might not last the entire season. The Phils should do what the Indians are doing with Grady Sizemore. Basically play 2 games and give him a day off. At least up until the all star break to see how he’s holding up.

will he stop greasing the Hair? Huge Phil’s fan transplanted to Indiana 45 years ago. Cannot wait to see the complete lineup out there.

You’ll go blind you keep up with that…

No, no, it’s just the only thing to say when a guy gets back from an injury. It’s relief, but it’s measured, no party until we see Utley back doing what he used to do consistently.

If he returns to form, and we’re already winning this much without him… Jesus… Look out NL. Hell, look out AL too.
