Fenway Park crowd serenaded Kevin Youkilis with Biz Markie song at 2:00 am

biz markie just a friend

Craig recapped last night’s epic seven-hour, rain-delayed Red Sox-Angels game, but he left out my favorite part:

At around 2:00 a.m. Boston time the crowd of about 500 or so fans at Fenway Park started singing “Just A Friend” by Biz Markie during Kevin Youkilis‘ at-bat, substituting “Youk” for “you” in the lyrics.

Oh baby Youk, you got what a I need … but you say he’s just a friend.

Here’s the amusing video:

Question: Would they play the National Anthem again when the sun comes up?

  2. BC - May 5, 2011 at 11:22 AM

2nd Question: Do they turn the beer back on in the 14th inning? Kind of toggle every 7 innings?

Even though at a musical level that song stinks. I absolutely effing love that song. And since I know no shame, I’m proud of that.

Props to the Boston fans b/c that is brilliant stuff.

      Indeed.

Don’t give them too much credit. That song plays every time he comes to bat.

Ah, good to know. I’ll resume hating Red Sox Nation now. Thank you.

i would like to go on record as suggesting that the entire crowd could very well be singing this again at about 2:00 this afternoon…this thing could easily catch on and become some sort of signature Fenway ode to Youk…

That would be pretty cool. As a Yankee gan I generally don’t have much to like about the RS but Youkillis is one of the few RS I like.

that’s pretty wicked. hilarious how the tv guys say nothing for a few verses, fail to acknowledge the chant at all, and just randomly chime in with “youkilis takes ball one.” BOR-ing.

i was at the espn zone in denver for the nba all-star game’s after party in 2005, and Biz Markie was one of the performers. The crowd was essentially disinterested for most of his performance, but they went wild for this track. For what it’s worth, this evening was a turning point in my life, one of the first times I made a “good decision” while in an inebriated state. the good decision was NOT to punch stephen a. smith in the mouth. i LOATHE that guy.

The TV guys were probably half-asleep by then, and certainly were not drinking as much as the folks that were still in the crowd.
Definition of eternal bliss: A long rain delay before the 7th inning (provided you have enough cash to pay for the $12 beers).

    FWIW – That’s Youkilis’s at-bat music.

  8. jimbo1949 - May 5, 2011 at 2:55 PM

Not that they were bored or anything. After a foul pop into the ESPN booth they started chanting for Nomahh who was working the game.

500 loaded college kids @ 2 AM. Nothing new in Boston.
That song’s only used occassionally on Youkilis AB’s.
