As the article makes clear, he CAN’T afford a driver and an assistant. The assistant was in near tears because her husband wanted to kill Dykstra for not paying her. The driver went unpaid for days and then only took a fraction of what he was owed in the form of memorabilia. Hotels don’t work on the barter system.

Dykstra was and is a huckster. The ability to create the illusion of having power and status when you really don’t is part and parcel of that.

Can I ask that you look more into this? Something isn’t right. What kind of man can afford a driver AND an assistant yet not be able to even afford a cheap, run-down hotel or something to sleep in at night? I’m thinking there might be something more to this we’re not getting.

I’m sorry. I read the story on espn.com a while back which I think was a recap of the GQ story on the history of all this Dykstra madness and I just find it hard to feel bad for this guy. People focus on the fall from financial grace but the behind the scenes stuff about ripping off his own mom and the rest of his family and employees shows how low this guy was willing to go. The thing about it is that he’s not a guy who knows he’s doing something wrong. He honestly convinces himself that he’s right and anyone with a problem with his illicit activities are just out to get him. The fact that his family lets him live like this on the streets shows how much he must have done to push them away. Scary.
