Oh, come off it, if you don’t know Yankees history, don’t make it up!
Gehrig had a debilitating disease (named after him) that resulted in his death a couple of years after it struck him with his inability to play.
DiMaggio knew he stayed a year too long but even then management wanted to sign him to a record-breaking contract that he refused.
Mantle stayed 2 or 3 years too long, knew it, but needed the money.
And Leave Lou Gehrig Alone!!! As far as I’m concerned he was a True Yankee, playing or not, til the day he died.

New York fans don’t forget anything. They’ll always love Posada, but this will be the taste left in their mouth when they remember him; the day he sat out against the Red Sox because he didn’t want to hit ninth and made Girardi have to repeat a lie.
