Who would want to kill Ron Santo?

May 16, 2011, 1:40 PM EST

Ron Santo

This is from Friday — found via Baseball Think Factory — but apparently Ron Santo’s FBI file has been released. FBI file? For Santo?  Yep: he had some death threats in the early 70s. USA Today has the details of the threat letters and the investigation.

All I can do is sit here and wonder what in the heck someone as unassuming as Ron Santo could do to inspire death threats.  Even the deranged, one thinks, would be attracted to a different, more provocative target. Joe Pepitone played on those teams, for example. I can totally see Joe Pepitone getting under someone’s skin.  But Santo?

Gee whiz.

He did offend people with that heal-clicking dance after victories during that time. I didn’t care for it but no way did he deserve a death threat. RIP, Ron.

Who knows……hopefully it’s nothing to do with billy goats or Italian pork sandwich debates…

It was probably his lack of clutch hitting that got some people mad.

Durocher really, really disliked him. But if Durocher had been going to send death threats to anyone, Santo would surely have been way down the list, given the number of enemies he made over the years.

You guys are all idiots. People on the inside are well aware that Hank Steinbrenner sent those threats. The guy is a menace….
