The most dreaded phrase in all of sports: “Son, here’s your plane ticket; you have an appointment with Dr. Andrews tomorrow afternoon. Be on that first plane out!”.

Thankfully there are very, very few thoroughly despicable pro athletes (like Barroid Bonds for example), who I’m sure any of us wouldn’t mind seeing go down, but Soriano by all reports isn’t certainly one of those.

Nonetheless, if Soriano does have a major arm/elbow/shoulder injury, it would in some respects be poetic justice for Cashman who had the cajones to openly disagree with the Steinbrenner boys about signing him, as well as poetic justice to see the a Yankees get stuck with yet another recklessly big contract too.

That aside, I wish the player though well. If someone is willing to give you that sort of guaranteed money, you can’t blame a man for taking it.

All three relievers signed from the Rays this offseason for big bucks have all been disappointments- Soriano, Wheeler, and Benoit. The Rays continue to plod along without them- amazing.

You’ll probably get a lot of people disagreeing with you, but I think it was a pretty decent signing. Since 2006, Soriano has been incredibly dominant:

It seems like every single year, we have to have one highly paid pitcher fold up. Too bad there are two of them this year. At least he’s not Lackey.

I’ll eat crow here. I rip on Cashman’s decisions a lot, and I supported signing Soriano (though not for the total amount of the contract). It still doesn’t change my mind about the rash of aging, temporary vets that Cashman signed, but I have to give him credit for saying he wasn’t in favor of this contract. Any way you look at this, it sucks for Yankees fans. Sure, Soriano had some problems in the past, but when he’s healthy, he’s one of the best relievers out there. Check out his stats since 2006.

Not sure if serious, but Soriano never pitched three healthy years in a row. He had pitched two healthy ones before joining the Yanks though…

I was going to say the same thing. There’s just something about this that feels Pavanoesque, but I mean this is a pitcher with pain in his elbow, not in his ass, so maybe Soriano deserves the benefit of the doubt?

Unlike the Feliciano breakdown, there was no way to predict this. Not that it was a smart deal, but the injury is just one of those things.
