On what planet do you imagine players like Burrell, Rowand and Tejada have any impact on the organization doing what’s best for Posey?

Aside from SS, there are no other available positions. The outfield is packed 2 deep for each OF position: Burrell, Ross, Torres, Rowand, Schierholtz, Ford, Huff (hopefully never again), Burriss (super-utility – 2B, SS & corner OF), and then the Belt callup (1B & OF).

Sandoval 3B, Tejada/Burriss SS, Sanchez/Fontenot 2B, Huff/Belt 1B.

So unless we start dumping players, there is no where for Posey to move permanently. And our farm system is producing really good prospects at each position over the next 2 years.

Next year is a different story, and long term, who knows where the holes will open up. But for now, he calls the best game, and has gold glove & MVP potential. I believe we have a catching prospect who could replace Posey in a year or two, but not now…and not with this pitching staff. There was enough heartache switching from Molina to Posey, to not disrupt the staff. We would be extremely lucky if our next prospect can move in as easily as Posey did.

Rowand needs to be dumped, Burrell is most likely gone after this year, Tejada is gone, and there are questions about Ross/Torres long term since we have Ford, Schierholtz, Burriss, Belt who could be our starting OF for years.

Hopefully, this is just a fluke that he is getting a so many direct hits in such a short time frame.

He was actually a shortstop in college, moved to catcher because they didn’t have anybody else that could do it. He’s probably a good enough athlete to move back to short, but like somebody said, his offense isn’t as valuable at short as at catcher. More good hitting shortstops out there than catchers.

He already does start at 1B occasionally. Huff will get a night off, moving Posey to first and Whiteside, Posey’s backup, will do the catching. Whiteside is a capable catcher, but isn’t good offensively, even when compared to the Giants’ pitiful lineup.

As for Posey getting beaned, it’s bad luck. He got hit twice again on Sunday (Sat?). Both tips that he couldn’t have reacted to – one to the thigh and one to the jaw. It took him a good 5 minutes or so to shake off the hit to the face.

Considering that Posey played all 9 positions in a game as a stunt in college I am guessing he could handle first base.

Of course when you take a valuable catcher that is not terrible defensively and move him pretty much anywhere else, he becomes less valuable.

Is it a technique problem or just bad luck? I don’t watch him play enough to have a feel for him.

I think the solution is pretty obvious.

Turn him into a shortstop. He’s not going to be any worse than Tejada at this point, right?!
