What the guy needs, or rather needed, was to remain a starter in the minors so that he could work on his mechanics and become more consistent with his delivery. Because he was so raw, he would have benefited more from instruction, pitching as much as possible, and working on his secondary pitchers. Instead, the Reds rushed him to provide minor help to the big club, retarding his development in the process.

the best thing for the reds and chapman is to leave him down there untill he gets control of his powerful stuff and if that means the rest of the year then so be it. same thing with volquez they have seen the results with both of them not having control so let them stay as long as it takes. they are of no use to the team untill they get thier issues fixed.the reds are bad enough without these guys adding to them.

Two soft flys/long bloopers into the outfield, one ground ball that he took off the calf and another right up the middle. I guess you could say it was “better” command but he still had multiple wild pitches. Not a very impressive outing.

Actually, the more I think about it, too bad Chapman wasn’t still with the big club the other night when the Phillies beat the Reds in 19 innings. With him relieving, the Phillies could have won the game sooner.

Were the hits smoked, or did bad defense come into play? Any walks to go with the 5 K’s? If no walks, I’d actually say that he pitched great and probably just got unlucky on the balls that were hit in play (5/6 of them went for hits). Now if he had 3 walks, that’s a different story. Either way, you can’t really take too much from a 2 inning sample.

You never know with pitchers, especially unproven ones, which Chapman still is — ineffective because he’s wild. Up until last year, he never pitched one game in MLB, and was signed to a ton of money. I remember when he signed with the Reds that they said the contract was very complicated, but they are at the very least on hook for 30 mil over 6 years.

I would have never gave that type of coin to this guy. All the more reason to have a separate international draft, to keep costs down for these type of unknown players.
