This demands a serious look at rules change! As a several decade baseball fan I have never liked nor agreed with a rule that lets a strong, fast athlete plow into a stationary target, shoulder-first, at full speed. Ridiculous! The rule should NOT permit the catcher to completely block the plate, but should also require that the runner *slide*

I don’t need to watch it again. He turn into the 1st base side as he started his lean. He made the decision to go away from the plate and to run over Posey when Posey wasn’t blocking the plate.

Cousins could have been and should have been in a position to slide. It was his own doing that he was in no position to do so when Posey started to move. Cousins made the choice to run over the catcher instead of to touch home plate ASAP and he made that Choice when Posey wasn’t blocking any of the plate…if you need confirmation of this…just check out the screen cap in the “should catchers be banned” post. If Posey catches the ball Cousins is out. In contrast, if Cousins slides into the plate (which is what all players should be doing), he scores easily and no one is hurt.

plate was not blocked half way down the line,, O.G. decision was made to go for the kill, not the plate before the Posey had the ball and turned to make a tag like an infielder there was plenty of plate to get to,, this was ugly stuff,, I remember Pudge sitting on the plate, may be wrong on that, memory cells aren’t what they ever should have been, I also know that J.T. was on his last legs as a player and his dad taught him well to hit guys in the head with your forearms, linebacker was old man Snow? ,, I remember in a fog of clear young cells Pete Rose being wrong about it too,,, On all sides they say this was a clean funeral, said so too for Mr Fosse,, and next time it won’t be any more right.

Gator, with a world of respect to you and your dinosaur kin, gotta disagree on a level or two. Yes, was a clean hit in the NFL or WWF. J.T. grew up in a football family and baseball has a long history of less than honorable contact at the plate that should change. Always done so doesn’t mean it is right. Us aged reptiles may be slow to change, but if our loved are to survive, maybe we need to stop wasting our youth as we wasted ours. Dude made a decision, in a life death evolutionary hunter prey kinda way half way down from third to go for the head, like L.T. wired to the hippo-campus, and made his play,, plate or head, score or score,,, clean play for sure, still it is, was, and always will be ugly, some things need to evolve to survive,, damn Feesh in S.F. are often a problem, a lifetime of nightmares return tonight,,,, I’ll take my ancient croc DNA against your gator DNA anytime old man,,,, rest in fear, please

he did not go into the plate,, he went in head hunting like a linebacker hitting the hole,, everytime this has happened I haven’t liked it,, Posey was turning to make a tag, not not not blocking the plate,, this was ball, this was clean and hard nosed,,, this was ugly,, Gator, so was J.T.,, football family and all, it was ugly then, and is ugly now,, and, Mr. Bicepts, like lemmings, it will continue,, I hope it doesn’t happen to one of your squad.
I watch on MLB.TV from Taiwan these days, Miller and Kruk sounded like it was a funeral, and the only comment from the Gigantos staff is, “not good”. I’ve broken a few legs, my own more than once, and “not good” is, well, not good,, Gigantos retool again and will end up ruling the West, and shocking the Phils,,, again,,,

up to the players,, Los Gigantos players seem to agree that it was clean. It has long been discussed that Posey would not block the plate. I don’t see that he was, plenty of plate to get to without going all football to score. Man alive, that was a football play. Good hard baseball, fine,,, not necessary and hard to watch any player blown up like that. Yes, s**t happens and as Kruk said, “It is the law of the land”. Still don’t much make it or any play like it right. Just sayin,,,

You need to watch it again. Cousins was in no position to slide, since he was leaning forward as he ran the last few feet to the plate, and he could clearly see Posey shifting towards his (Posey's) left. Try stopping the action at the moment of impact: Cousins and Posey make contact just as Posey has shifted his upper body across the front of the plate, and Cousins crosses directly over the plate with no deflection of his course from four or five feet back. That's hardly what you could call turning into Posey for the hell of it. It's heading directly for the plate - which, once again, is exactly what he's supposed to do.

Cousins turned toward Posey and decided to barrel him over before Posey even tried to field the ball and started his turn. The runner made the decision to run him over instead of sliding into the plate when the catcher wasn’t in the way. It was an unnecessary play by Cousins, all he had to do was slide into home and he is easily safe, he went out of his way to run over Posey instead.

Paperlions: I’ve run the video several times now and I can’t agree with your read of the play. All of Posey’s momentum at the time of the hit was to his left and he was blocking nearly all of the plate with his upper torson when Cousins hit him. Cousins was running slightly to his right of the line and lowered his shoulder in the direction – his left – from which Posey was moving, but kept running straight ahead until the last second when he angled himself towards the middle of the plate. I don’t see anything “malicious” whatsoever about this play – it’s not like, say, that sociopath Nyjer Morgan going out of the basepaths to knock him over. Cousins’ body passed directly over the center of the plate during and after the collision. It’s the runner’s obligation to cross that plate and Cousins did exactly what he was supposed to do. Posey, on the other hand, was not in control of the ball and positioned himself to block Cousins before he had it. It’s unfortunate that Posey was injured but that’s an inherent risk of his position and a consequence more of the way he positioned himself than of anything Cousins did.

I was about five rows back from the rail in the field boxes just to the left of home plate for the Snow/Pudge train wreck. I could hear the “thud” of the collision, hear both guys grunt and see blobs of sweat fly off of Pudge at the hit, and Pudge was flat on his ass – and then, almost immediately, thrust up his had with the ball to show the ump he had it. On the drive home one of the Feesh commented to whomever the radio interviewer was, “Pudge wasn’t letting go of that ball if he had been hit by an eighteen wheeler.”

But Snow knocked Pudge cleanly over. Posey went over using his left foot as a fulcrum – I strongly suspect he broke his ankle. Ugly thing to watch.

I don’t particularly care for the argument that “It’s always been done this way.”

However, I think this is something that should be left up to the players involved. Not reporters and bloggers reacting to an unfortunate injury.

If the MLBPA on their own wants blocking the plate outlawed they certainly have the clout to get it done. Especially the Catchers.

That argument amounts to, “They’re allowed to do it because they’re allowed to do it.” Not convincing. Pitchers used to be allowed to shine up the ball and hitters used to be allowed to come to the plate without a helmet on.

I’ll state this as simply as I can. There are certain rules that are not enforced, regardless of the sport, because it has always been accepted as just the way the game is played. Catchers blocking the plate is one of them in baseball. Ther are allowed to do it and rightfully so because it’s been part of the game for over a century.

People like you probably have never played baseball in your life and probably never knocked up a play to win at any cost. That’s what it is all about.

Go back to reading your rule books, studying your fantasy sheets for you leagues, and collecting your baseball cards and leave the real sports talk up to the adults. Either way I don’t care.

I gotta agree with your first paragraph. That hit seemed malicious and really unnecessary. I think Cousins gets in safely by going around the tag. You can tell that Posey wasn’t expecting to get hit, and like you said, was sweeping back to apply a tag.

That sucks… Posey, as much as I hated him last October, is a hell of a ball player and a good guy in baseball. Hopefully he comes back sooner rather than later.
