I’ve never really liked the idea that only teams that make the playoffs can have MVPs. Plenty of players have gotten MVPs without it, and if you’re the best player in baseball, you shouldn’t miss the award because your team doesn’t win 90 games. You can’t carry a team in baseball the way you can in some other sports. And you have to really do some twists and turns to make getting to October baseball the only way you’re valuable to your team.

That said, if Granderson has suddenly become a 55-HR hitter, he’s got a shot at the award no matter how Bautista does, thanks to that playoff bias.

S’cool, p-youk. Dunno as I totally agree but then I likes me some JB, so I’m not exactly Mr. Objective. “JB for MVP” just has a better ring to it than “Grandy for MVP” y’know?

MVP = Most Valuable Player = Player who makes a difference on the team = Player that actually brings the team to something different than just a trip home at the end of September.
OK, FINE! maybe i am being a little cynical but seriously come end of season if Bautista has 65HR 210 175RBI and an OBS of .900 but the Jays finish in 3rd how “Valuable” was he really? this is the never ending argument but i honestly believe that the MVP cannot go to a guy on a losing team. and YES i know that the season is far from over and they are still contending but im just saying….

MVP = Best player in baseball, not best player on the Yankees, P-Youk. The season aint over, only a couple of games separate the Yanks from the Jays so locking in the Yankees as “The Contender” in this debate is premature. Anyways, Bautista is head and shoulders out hitting & playing Grandy (blatant fan-boy homerism in all its glory, eh?).

But lets entertain your notion of a CURRENT contender. Grandy’s a good dude so I got no prob wit him as MVP, but if we gotta pick an MVP from the Yankees why not Russell Martin?
(1) He’s a Canadian, so he’s automatically the superior.
(2) He is an order of magnitude better as a catcher than Jorge and Yankees love them some catchers so why not RM?.
(3) He can hit him some home runs, too.
(4) He is CARRYING the pitching staff, especially when it comes to AJ, Freddy Garcia and Fat Bart. You don’t think those guys win because they’re any good do you?

If its gotta be a Yankee then its gotta be Russell “Son of a Beaver” Martin.

sorry but i am going to disagree. in my opinion Granderson is the current MVP leading candidate from the AL east. then again this goes back to my take on the fact that the MVP should never go to a non contending team ( thats not to say that the Jays are not contenders). in fact, one can argue that a great player on a bad team is the LEAST valuable player due to the fact that the extra 5 or 6 games that they win because of that guy could cost them a high place in the draft pick.

No offense to the Iron Giant, but your boy for the HR to save the world is the The Most Interesting Hitter in The World, Jose Bautista. You want a HR hit, right? You go to the expert, the sure thing, the ringer, the stud. This is not the guy who hits it further but the guy who hits it more often.

BTW: MVP, baby, MVP….
