Bust her what? If this player wasn’t a superstar i.e. Greg OlsonBraves 1992,no one would say anything about changing the rules. Also, he set up for that play poorly. You have a split second to do it, but he just set up to get smashed.

With players getter bigger, stronger, and faster every year the NFL had the good sense to change the rules to prevent players, whatever their color or status, from getting permanently disabled or killed by spearing other player, amoung other injury prevention rules. It’s time baseball did the same. It’s only a matter of time before we see it in baseball, someone killed diving into the plate and the catcher blocks the plate and bang, he’s dead. Sometimes change is good. I want to see great players at every position. There’s room for discussion about where the catcher could set up for a play at the plate, a play-at-the-plate box so to speak. Why wait for a catastrophe before the inevitible happens…these guys have families too.

I’ve thought the same thing about Mauer.

Yes, on the one hand it IS great and unusual to have a good defensive catcher who’s also a helluva offensive player (Bench, Berra, Pudge Rodriguez, etc.)…

…but on the other, the physical wear over the years has to worry the team. It sometimes seem more practical to move them to a position where they’ll have less chance of injury and wear to the body.

I know baseball players are a proud lot, so it probably won’t happen.

If a fielder blocks the basepath to any other base (1st, 2nd or 3rd) the runner is called safe, except home plate where somehow it is acceptable to stand in the way of a guy going full speed and get your clock cleaned, and then everyone is wringing their hands , and the runner, the runner ??? must explain his actions to the media. F that Posey should explain why he allowed himself to be injured.

Go back and look at Craig’s 3 adjectives: “handsome, white, marketable.” Keep those in mind when you compare the fuss and concern made about Posey’s collision to Carlos Santana’s from last year. Also bear in mind Posey plays for a WS winning team, not a last place one, etc..Then draw your own conclusions.

The only thing I didn’t like about this whole ordeal was that the agent and Buster Olney were calling on baseball to eliminate heavy catcher/baserunner contact. That was out of line.They were overreacting in the heat of the moment.

That being said, I hope this kid’s injury isn’t career ending. I don’t think, when/if he returns, that he will ever catch again.
