Joe Torre used to be asked when he had a starter coming off the DL what spot the”6th starter” would take. Joe always said something to the effect that’s a problem we never seem to get to.
Would like to see Phil back, and in good repair, and then we have 6, only Nova will have been traded for a 3rd-ish starter, and the same problem would develop, but then they’ll be an injury to someone else, and Presto!-we’re back to 5.

The Yankees IMO have wisely not rushed Hughes and worked hard to keep his rehab (and expectations), under the radar.

To me though the more interesting news is coming out of Chicago today, where now there’s a lot of speculation that the Cubs are finally planning to back up the truck and unload over priced, under performing veterans Carlos Zambrano, slacker A. Ramirez and try and find a sucker (as the Angels were trading good players for as well as assuming Vernon Wells dead money contract), for Soriano (good luck with that one!).

I believe that Zambrano and Soriano both have full or partial no trade clause contracts. Ramirez will be a free agent at the end of the season, but should be movable if the price in terms of prospects is right because there are a few contending teams who could use a third baseman.

If the Cubs are smart, they’ll try to move Zambrano while they can; the dude’s one big ticking time bomb and has totally undermined green Manager Mike Quade.

Ironically enough, part of the reason that the Cubs are said to be seeking top prospects in return for all of these three guys is because they got fleeced of a couple of their best prospects in the Matt Garza trade last offseason. The Cubs thought that they were getting an ace, when in fact they got a glorified middle of the rotation starter at best.
