Rich Hill will need season-ending surgery

Yesterday we saw Rich Hill leave the White Sox-Red Sox game after grabbing his left arm. Today the worst fears have been confirmed: Pete Abraham reports that Hill will need season-ending surgery.  The exact diagnosis is unknown, but the MRI he received yesterday confirmed that the injury was serious. Probably a ligament/Tommy John thing.

Hill was having a good year too, having come back from previous shoulder surgery to remake himself a pretty effective lefty specialist.  Bad luck.

I’m not sure it was bad luck; he screwed with his arm slot a lot this year. It worked really well for him, stuff-wise, but maybe there was a health cost associated with abandoning what (I assume) was his natural arm slot.

Injuries are always bad news but it especially sucks when it’s a guy who looked like he was just starting to get his career back on track, and with his hometown team (born in Milton, MA) no less.

It’s was good to see him getting back on track, but in the back of mind I was thinking ok when is the injury coming. Pitching is tough on the body and when you start tweaking mechanics like the post above said you increase the risk when your muscles and joints are not use to the new motion. Even the slightest change can have huge affects.

Okay, take Rich Hill–and take Dice-K if you must–but please, Arm Gods, leave us Beckett and Lester and Buchholz. Amen.

I’m pretty pleased to be rid of Matsuzaka for a while…but this, not so much. He was Boston’s only lefty reliever who was any good.

OMG- a player got hurt doing something. We must change the rules and outlaw pitching immediately!

      We should just outlaw injuries.
