Joe Torre is going to have a talk with Brian Sabean

Tim Brown of Yahoo! hears from a source that MLB’s discipline czar Joe Torre is going to call Brian Sabean to talk about his comments regarding Scott Cousins. I would presume that there will be something of a “hey Brian, MLB frowns on senior management issuing or perpetuating defacto bounties on marginal rookies” flavor to the call.

I also presume that Sabean will have an apology issued at some point soon, after which we’ll hear that Buster Posey and Scott Cousins have had a brief call to talk about the play, thereby putting an end to all of this.  Really, sometimes it just takes a total jackass like Brian Sabean to show us the way to a resolution.

Yes, resolution, please. Make this go away.

So done with this story that I am actually considering reading an article on the NFL lockout situation.

      Brian S

To quote Jimmy Duggan…”There’s no crying in Baseball” stop whining

  2. spudchukar - Jun 3, 2011 at 1:37 PM

Yeah, Sabean’s veiled threat, isn’t much different than mob boss wishing some competitor would “just disappear”.

  3. lardin - Jun 3, 2011 at 1:40 PM

Your right Craig, Until Lincecum or Cain decides to take matters into their own hands and Drill cousins..

  4. Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - Jun 3, 2011 at 1:49 PM

Any guesses as to why Posey hasn’t accepted Cousins’ attempts to contact him? Politics? Being a dick? Phone died?

    • otb510 - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:18 PM

Maybe, just maybe, his mind is slightly preoccuppied by the fact that his season is over AND the fact that he has two screws holding his ankle tendions in place. Regardless, if I were in that situation, I’d be hesitant to talk to the person just based on the fact that ANY conversation is going to be vetted to the media and like this one, blow completely out of proportion.

      • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - Jun 3, 2011 at 3:59 PM

Maybe, just maybe, you could have made that sentence not sound so dickish. I posed a question is all (wondering aloud if you will). It doesn’t require the negative tone. I get your point, but I’m not convinced that’s all of it. The media scrutiny def has something to do with it. I think CJ has a good point below as well. The communication is all likely funneled through the team so they might have had a say on the matter as well.

    • CJ - Jun 3, 2011 at 3:48 PM

usually such requests go through the team. not directly to a guy’s cell phone. I’ve read elsewhere Cousins’ contacted the Giants and they won’t put him in touch with Posey.

      • Utley's Hair - Jun 3, 2011 at 4:14 PM

Any way I can get my telemarketer calls routed to Sabean’s phone?

    • jxegh - Jun 4, 2011 at 11:43 AM

Hey idiot, what does Posey have to do with Sabean being a dick? Look, it was a legal play and Cousin doesn’t need to apoligize nor does Posey need to accept his calls.

  5. sdelmonte - Jun 3, 2011 at 1:50 PM

If this were that sport with the orange round ball and Mark Cuban’s mouth, Sabean would be getting poorer.

    • Utley's Hair - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:02 PM

Is that your attempt to say that you want Mark Cuban to buy the Mutts?

      Where has BC been, anyway?

      • cur68 - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:20 PM

I keep asking the same thing. Things are interesting in Mets land and not a peep out of that guy. Hey! Maybe he’s Einhorn/Finkle? Too busy these days being a big shot to converse with us little people. Huh!

      • Jonny 5 - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:36 PM

Wasn’t Finkle the one with the hemorrhoids and obsession with the laces being out and enemy to the isotoner glove spokesman?

  6. royalsfaninfargo - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:03 PM

I hope for the Giants sake this is put to rest. The GM sets the tone for the whole organization and right now that tone sounds very whiny and immature.

  7. cur68 - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:04 PM

2 things; I want Sabean to shut the hell up and I want this business of threatening Cousins (both public threats and Sabean’s damn fool statements) to go away. Far away. If Joe Torre can make it so he will have finally done something useful in his current job.

Both Cousins and Posey are being victimized now and at least Posey was hurt in a baseball play by a guy trying to play hard, though he was misguided (literally and figuratively). Sabean is inflaming this and is a hypocrite to boot. Shut up Mr. Sabean. Just shut the hell up.

  8. halladaysbicepts - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:15 PM

Joe Torre: “Hello, Brian. This is the Joe.”

Brian Sabean: “Hello, the Joe. What do you want?”

Joe Torre: “Stop talking smack about Cousins unless you can back it up.”

Brian Sabean: “I’ll take both you and Cousins on at the same time. My mullet alone could kick your ass.”

Joe Torre: “I’m the great Joe. You cannot defeat me. I’ll send out a boozed up David Wells to take you out.”

    • cur68 - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:19 PM

Brian Sabean: “I’ve fought bigger girls than David Wells. More boozy too.”

      • halladaysbicepts - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:23 PM

You know, David Wells would probably like to take the Joe out. I don’t think Wells cared too much for the Joe. But, in reality Charlie Manuel could defeat all of them at the same time. Remember, he spent years in Japan and apparently took a liking to Karate and Japanese swords.

No one messes with Charlie Manuel. The only thing that ever defeated Charlie was the English language.

      • cur68 - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:29 PM

And even then he mangled it good.

  9. coryeuc - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:17 PM

Posey hasn’t responded because, I imagine, there is little to no cell service in AT&T Park. Maybe when they do talk they’ll agree to trade lineup cards before their next game and then publish a book together?

  10. yettyskills - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:23 PM

Tell Sabean the Marlins have pitchers who can throw 95 MPH pitches into the Giants faces if need be as well and that his threats are pretty tough talk from a guy who wont be on the field and never has been.
Remind him that he should hire someone to teach Posey how to catch because it was Posey who did everything wrong. Posey is a guy who puts on the shin guards and mask and is called a catcher. Too bad while everyone was marveling at his hitting they didn’t teach him how to play the position.

    • bobulated - Jun 3, 2011 at 2:33 PM

Seriously. Does Sabean expect the Fish pitchers just to take it and not retaliate? The Jints have guys that throw hard but the Fish have some large gentlemen who throw in the mid to high 90′s as well. I think the umps will be very aware of all this interplay when the teams meet again. In fact it will makce it that much harder on the pitchers as they might be hesitant to throw inside at all lest they miss, hit a guy and instantly get tossed for perceived retaliation.

Seriously, are we resorting to just copying and pasting other people’s comments now?

    • dottiehinson - Jun 3, 2011 at 6:14 PM

He didn’t get Rookie of the Year on his hitting alone

  11. joecool16280 - Jun 3, 2011 at 3:19 PM

As a lifelong Giants fan I’m glad Sabean is getting called out here. He’s pretty much a smug prick. The only bad part (if there is one) about winning the Series last year is that his job is secure for a while longer. He lucked out w/ Kent and the journeymen they signed last year. The prospects they’ve had over the last few years (Posey, Panda, Lincecum) are due to great scouting not him.
