I don’t understand how anyone can complain that he answered the question. Baseball is a long monotonous season where players are asked the same questions over and over again so when a writer asks a different type of question and the player answers it why complain?

Yes Chipper could have given a stock answer like jeffbbf wants but why? He said nothing disparaging about either player or the Mets. If all athletes gave stock answers how often would anyone read the interviews? Most interviews are mundane anyway and you can almost interchange names or teams.

what makes a player, any player answer this type of question. Why not just say… ” I”m in no position to comment on personnel decisions other teams may or may not make. I think XXX is a great player and wherever he plays, opposing pitchers better be prepared.”

If by “build around an aging third-baseman” you mean “keep an aging third-baseman on the team until he’s ready to retire,” then yes. You are correct.

I’m really struggling here to find any way in which the Braves could be said to have “built around” Chipper in the past few years.

I like Jones. He is a first ballot HOFer, but of course he would say something like that. I am curious as well why a New York paper would ask his opinion about anything outside of when he will retire.

Disrespecting Chipper, and criticizing his GM advise are mutually exclusive. The Braves have been to the play-offs once in 6 years since the youth movement began, after playing in October the previous 14 of 15.

It just seems odd to me that he would recommend the current Braves’ path when they have, to date, enjoyed so little success.

I don’t understand why people want to disrespect Chipper. Yes, he’s old, and yes, he spends a couple of weeks on the DL every year, but if he had come up in the AL, he would have spent the last several years as a fearsome DH, and stayed in the lineup a lot more, since a lot of his injuries have been fielding-related.

I agree with the above statement. First of all, why did the NY Daily News solicit the opinion of one Larry Jones. Who cares what Larry thinks about David Wright. Larry should worry more about the Braves than what’s going on with the Mutts. His response should have been “I’ve got my own club to be concerned with. I don’t contemplate what other organizations do.”

Alderson is clearly going to break up the Mutts and clean house. You do that by trading the drek that has tainted the clubhouse and contaminated it with losing. Wright and Reyes is where it has to start, along with Beltran. If I was a Mutts fan, I would be demanding it. Start young. Then you’ve got something.

Being a Phillies fan, I want to see the Mutts good again so we can have compelling baseball to watch between the two natural rivals.
