While Justin Morneau and Denard Span are out of the Twins’ starting lineup tonight due to injury, we at least have some encouraging news about the face of the franchise to pass along.

According to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Joe Mauer will be the designated hitter tomorrow in his first minor league rehab game with High-A Fort Myers.

Mauer, who caught five innings and threw out a baserunner earlier today, has been playing in extended spring training games for a little over a week now. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list earlier this week, so he won’t be eligible to return until June 12. Setbacks are certainly possible, but his recent progress suggests he could be ready to rejoin the Twins on or around that date.

Mauer was batting .235/.289/.265 with one double and four RBI over his first 38 plate appearances before going on the disabled list with bilateral leg weakness in April.

Unfortunately it may be to little to late for the twinkies. Grantedd they are beating up on the Royals in their series right now, but they have a heck of a hole to climb out of. BTW, Twins radio broadcasts are much better without Jack Morris doing the color.

The joke used to be we are playing with our minor league players. No joke that tonight we are 2 or 3 injuries away from our actual minor league team. Gardy will probably get canned for it but when the DL list looks like it has you can’t do much.

Gardy won’t get canned. Being from Chicago, we hate the Twins, but have a great deal of respect for that team and what that man has been able to instill in his players. Everyone know’s this isn’t Gardy’s fault and noone is pointing their finger at him.

This is definitely good news for Twins fans. Shows that he is progressing well. Barring any setbacks he might be ready to come off the DL when he is first eligible. I don’t believe their season is over yet. If they are more than 10 games back at the all-star break then I will give up on them. Until then they need Mauer back asap! If you’d like to see all the Twins injury updates I have compiled them here.
