cur68: well, with horned toads, yeah, Salmonella is the worst of it, though he really was pretty good in From Here to Eternity.

OOOoooooHEEEHEEEHEEEAhhhhHAHAHAHwhoooheheheheheheeeee....

But seriously, folks - the only other lizard-borne disease I'm aware of is pulmonary anthrax, which is carried in the saliva of the Komodo dragon. In dragons, it's a symbiont; the lizard is immune but the infection helps bring down large prey that the dragon bites but cannot overpower immediately. It just tracks a wounded deer or pig for a few hours with its elegantly bifurcated tongue and then finishes off its dinner when the infection sufficiently weakens it.

It's also been discovered recently that the dragon's saliva itself is venomous, making it only the third known poisonous lizard along with the Mexican beaded lizard and Gila monster. Ask any native of Komodo or Flores about it and they'll throw up their hands in exasperation and ask, "who needed those *!%#* things to be poisonous too?"

None of the beaver that attacked me carried rabies. Crabs, yes - but beavers spend a lot of time in the water, so perhaps that's to be expected. Then again, some of them resembled the things falling off the Cloverfield monster. The beaver, I mean. I had been drinking.

By the way, I suppose even as awful as rabies treatment must be, I think it's still even-up with being slashed by a leprotic armadillo.

This just in: Adam Jones can play some CF. He ran down a couple of fly balls effortlessly last night, as the tired and bedraggled A's could only manage 2 against Brian Matusz, both runs coming on Adam Rosales' HR in his inaugural game of the season after being out for nearly a year. Ellis' hammy gave new-guy Sizemore a chance to play. He hit the ball well but his MLB track record gives one pause. Meanwhile Gio had A's starter virus which means elevating everything. He seemed to get over it after a few innings and settled down, but not until he'd allowed 4. Of course, the questionable defense that also plagued the A's in April showed up again last night, in the form of a Pennington bobble and Suzuki throw to second, or rather right field. While officially the errors only led to 1 unearned run, they contributed to all 4 runs as both errors put Gio in difficulties early in the game.

Baltimore's bullpen showed up last night also, 3.2 IP and no hits allowed. After the 4 and 5 hour games in Boston, last night's 2:19 in front of 10,000 (hey, it's like the Mausoleum-but nicer) was refreshing.

Golly. Never knew they could get rabies. This answers some nagging questions I've had since I hit puberty lo those decades ago.

Says a child was bitten. Sucks, man. Rabies treatment is as painful as the bite if not more so if they go the old school cheap route. If it's the newer treatment then its not as bad (bit like a series of flu shots I think).

Well, all I got left to say is that a majestic and noble animal like the beaver should not be allowed to acquire rabies. What a cruel jest of god that this is so. Do horny toads get rabies? It's just salmonella you have to worry about with lizards isn't it?

Maybe the Jays need to swing at strike 1 and 2 as well? They have a lineup that can go back to back to back with the homers, so if they swing at all the strikes...well you get the picture.

As for the 'Yankee Philosphy of Scoring' what you do is build a tiny, pretty ballpark and get guys who hit exactly 399 feet. Then you can hit you some home runs.

As opposed to the KC method; play some D, hit some bloops, have a HUGE gorgeous park that sits mainly empty even when some ball is being played, and suck for years till you acquire a rotation not unlike the 2011 Phillies. Then you got a crack once in 25 years at contending. How does that ball club stay in business?

The Feesh slide reaches five, a numismatically significant digit since after losing four straight one-run games, they decided to give themselves a little more breathing room and lost this one by five runs. In the local parlance, that's seenko. Three consecutive quality starts by Javier Vasquez - a resource as rare as a gold nugget in an Everglades rivulet - apparently used up their quota for the month, and when they got clipped for a run in the first when Coghlan dogged getting Ricky Weeks' single back to the infield and he helped himself to a double and later scored, you know there was going to be trouble. They've lost 8 of 10 since effectively knocking the Jints out of contention, and they still can't seem to fathom what to do with a runner in scoring position.
Kauffman Stadium is gorgeous. The best thing about watching a Royal's ballgame is their stadium. Real grass. Symmetrical field. A pretty waterfall feature way, WAY out there over the center field wall. It's enormous, mind you, but real pretty; like a tall, robust girl who can stook hay in the wet weather. You stare and stare but cannot find a flaw because being big isn't really a flaw when you've been assembled by a kind and loving god having a real good day with the assembly process. She's alone, mind you. Seemed only a few came to the game. Actually maybe many were there but got lost being spread out so? Who knows.

That being said, it just swallows home runs up and allows speedy fielders to get some excercise. The Jays lost to that stadium and Felipe Paulino, all 6 foot 8 of him, who pitched as well as Brandon Morrow (who pitched well for a nice a change). It came down to Frank Francisco and some lousy pitching as he served some walks, 1 intentional (I mean why bother with the intentional pass? Let Frank pitch to the guy. Comes to the same thing in any event and maybe he gets himself out swinging at every pitch off the plate. Meh. Managers. Why are they there except to try and look clever?) and then the wee bloop single and BOOM there's the game in the 11th.

Note to the Jay's hitters; swing at the strikes. Trying to get a hit when you are already 2 down, as you watch straight pitch at belt high after straight pitch at belt high pop into the catcher's mitt, is not so easy. Just a thought.

As a Nationals fan...a split against the D'Backs (with two close losses and resounding wins), two wins in the Phillies series, and taking a Lincecum start to 13 innings. Couple this with a good draft. These are not "victories", but good signs of things to come. Dreams of a 2014 Natinals line-up fill my head at night.

Lidge can stay on the DL for the whole season for all I care. Theres nothing we can do with him if he comes back healthy. We don't want him closing, and ... well I don't want him pitching. I'd almost rather have David Herndon up there as a middle reliever. We have a setup guy and a closer in Jose and Mad Dog. Why eff with a good thing?

Scherzer gives up 5 runs, but who cares? Tigers had nine by then. a crisp 97 degree evening in Arlington, the Tigers bats warmed up. Scherzer gave up 5 runs, but who cares? Tigers had nine by then.
Don't worry, baseball fans, no more than two killed and 62 injured at any Yanks-Sox game!
Question of the day: Who hit the first World Series home run at Old Yankee Stadium?
