Sloppy on my part. Some of these players did not sign and were drafted later in (mostly) higher rounds. I went through all the HS and JuCo picks and found:

Players are drafted in the 30th round because they aren’t very good; it is the innate talent level, not being drafted in the 30th round, that leads to the poor success rate of players drafted in the 30th round. If he goes to USC for 3 years and re-enters the draft, he won’t be drafted much higher than he was this time unless he shows greater than expected development for those 3 years because teams factor in projection/development into their valuations….and he could be drafted lower (or not at all) if he fails to develop as expected.

If I were Trent Boras’ advisor, or his father, I’d tell him to go to USC and see if he can do better in a few years.

Scott Boras was a much better prospect, a 3rd round pick, FSL All-Star. Got injured, got passed on the Cards’ org depth chart by a better player (Tom Herr), and went back to school.

Does anyone know for sure that the kid can even play ball? Sounds like the Brewer’s scout is pretty sold on the kid. I say we give him a chance. He might not be a chip of the ole Boras block you know. Mid you if he starts blowing kisses after a homer I’m prepared to say “what did anyone expect, really?”.

Yes, at least. Anyway, that was meant as “tongue in cheek” . It has to be a tough decision and I don’t know what’s more important to Jr. Boras right now. I’d like to think an education trumps all, but that’s just not how it works every time is it?

If he wants to go to college, he better not have one.

If the guy wants to play pro ball, he should sign. The chances of developing into a pro player are much better if he gets started right now. When Boras is your father, your draft position and contract are pretty much irrelevant…and the only reason to go to college is to improve your draft stock/initial contract.

He will be royalty at USC and treated as such. Why would he not go to college for all of the benefits compared to A ball, when daddy is, well totally loaded?

Meanwhile, I expect the Boras son to go to USC in hopes of improving his draft stock in a couple years. He’ll have more fun at college in Los Angeles rather than riding buses around Class A leagues, anyway.
