Jorge can still hit the long ball, he can still play first, and he’s still a veteran presence, which no one here can truly quantify. Oh yea, he also a switch hitter (albeit a pretty one-sided one).

your point is certainly noted, but I believe Len is making a case to not burn DH on Jeter. His point is that the lineup would be better with one “shortstop” and a bigger bat than being tied to two “shortstops” (using that term loosely with Jeter, and then of course whoever the real SS ends up being).

Of course, there are Jeter’s defensive shortcomings to consider, but having a real masher at DH could easily make up for those shortcomings. I’d be curious where that real masher would come from, but it seems the Yankees always find a way to get what they want at the deadline

He may still have value, but I think that he would be of more value to a young team that wants to be a contender that lacks playoff experience (I’m thinking the Indians off the top of my head), than the Yankees. They could easily replace his production in the DH spot with any number of guys, and it’s not like he’s a catcher you bring off the bench for defensive purposes or anything. It almost seems that right now they’re keeping him around just for the sake of keeping the “Core Four” together,. i.e. more based on sentimental reasons as almost a mascot than based on actual production.

They don’t have much of a choice without him putting up a fuss, either play him every day or cut him. I don’t see an in-between in this situation.

Now if he “killed Boston pitching” that could have some merit, but if your primary defense for keeping Posada around is because the Universe can’t beat the Orioles without him, well, I don’t have words to decribe how silly that sounds.

Add to that the splits vs. Baltimore noted above and it sounds like an even worse defense, if that’s possible.
