Jorge isn't going anywhere people. He's still plenty useful to the Yanks and anyone that doesn't realize that has an extremely short-term memory. Is he the hitter that he used to be? Not in the slightest, but he's not a .190 hitter either.

Jorge can still hit the long ball, he can still play first, and he's still a veteran presence, which no one here can truly quantify. Oh yea, he also a switch hitter (albeit a pretty one-sided one).

paper,

your point is certainly noted, but I believe Len is making a case to not burn DH on Jeter. His point is that the lineup would be better with one "shortstop" and a bigger bat than being tied to two "shortstops" (using that term loosely with Jeter, and then of course whoever the real SS ends up being).

Of course, there are Jeter's defensive shortcomings to consider, but having a real masher at DH could easily make up for those shortcomings. I'd be curious where that real masher would come from, but it seems the Yankees always find a way to get what they want at the deadline

Fair enough...just pointing out that the last time he was in a similar situation, his "inner-Yankee" was nowhere to be found.

He may still have value, but I think that he would be of more value to a young team that wants to be a contender that lacks playoff experience (I'm thinking the Indians off the top of my head), than the Yankees. They could easily replace his production in the DH spot with any number of guys, and it's not like he's a catcher you bring off the bench for defensive purposes or anything. It almost seems that right now they're keeping him around just for the sake of keeping the "Core Four" together,. i.e. more based on sentimental reasons as almost a mascot than based on actual production.

Unlike almost anyone who would replace Posada, he offers flexibility. He can always catch in a pinch, and his switch-hitting makes match-ups more difficult. If the Yanks believe he will come around somewhat offensively, it might just be wise to keep him around, even if it is primarily as a bench player.

I never understood their thinking on this, he was a good hitter for a catcher, but was getting older and I said before the season there are plenty of better options for a dh. Now with his attitude and blowup, my joke was that maybe he was upset because he tried out for Dumbo with those ears, got rejected, so he did that blowup to qualify for the role a different way.

Once again the "haters" show how little they know about this game. And obviously they don't watch the Yankees as well; because with Teixeira injured by a pitch ball last night Posada was put into to play first, handled his position well and went 3 for 3 plus a one walk. Since Eric Chavez is still on the injured list Posada gets to play first and maybe get his swing back.

even if he did "kill Baltimore pitching", that's not a very strong reason to keep him. Who cares how he hits Baltimore?

Now if he "killed Boston pitching" that could have some merit, but if your primary defense for keeping Posada around is because the Universe can't beat the Orioles without him, well, I don't have words to decribe how silly that sounds.

Add to that the splits vs. Baltimore noted above and it sounds like an even worse defense, if that's possible.

But why DH Jeter? He's not hitting any better than Posada, so you might as well put him in the field so you can put a real masher at DH.

yankeesfanlen- his game calling abilities and defense behind the plate has ALWAYS been suspect, but he could hit the hell out of the ball, so it was ignored. I like the guy and was rooting for him, but the occasional single he gets just isn't going to cut it for a DH in the AL East.

Comments like "he kills Baltimore pitching" can't be just tossed out.
Jorge has 77 career AB against current Baltimore pitching.
Against the starters in 46 AB he's he's .130/.231/.217 with 1 HR.
Against the whole staff he's .208/.282/.442.
Someone's getting killed but it's not the Baltimore pitchers.

When will this be over? It's unaccountable, frankly. Posada needs to go NOW, not by the ASB. Not even a handful of games separate the teams in the AL East and The Universe keeps screwing around with not only Posada but Jeter, too? WTF? Are these the Yankees or a retirement home?
