Was Bryce Harper just … kissing back?

Jun 8, 2011, 3:35 PM EDT

Here to Eternity

The plot — which was already kind of thin to begin with, even if it was fun — has thickened. CSN Washington reports that it’s possible that when Bryce Harper blew that kiss at the pitcher the other day, he was merely returning the favor from an earlier incident. As reported first by the Hagerstown Herald-Mail:

“Monday’s drama started in the first inning when Neal struck out Harper on a borderline call Harper didn’t care for to end the first inning. Some observers said Tuesday that the groundwork for the incident started there, with Neal sending a kiss in Harper’s direction after the whiff.”

In other words, this whole affair may be less about the unwritten rules and professional deportment than it is about the hot, simmering desire between Harper and the opposing pitchers of the Sally League.  Which frankly, is a way better story if you ask me.

Now, let us relive the passion:

    Slow news day, Craig?

Nice From Here to Eternity reference.

    I love that picture.

Back in the day, that movie was controversial because, you know, kids might be harmed watching two consenting adults kiss for more than three seconds.

Yep, that was a rule in movies for a long time.

      There’s Burt, but where’s Salmonella?

    Round 2. Ding, ding, ding.

I’m suprise that when SuperBryce blew the kiss, everyone in the field didn’t blow away ala Superman 2 style.

      *fieldt.

Even if it’s true, Bryce also whiffed on a golden chance to be the bigger man AND have the last laugh.

Welps, I just got the news. My kid just made the all star team. I will be sure to tell him it’s polite to blow kisses to guys who go yard on you. Which I don’t understand because most guys say *%$7 and stuff like that when it happens. I’m not here to explain to him the meaning behind unwritten rules. It’s my job to report them as I hear them. Home run + Kisses = good, (unwritten rule # 121)

Unwritten rule # 122. When you hit a homerun and cross the plate, you don’t point your finger to the heavens…

In that picture, I think Shane was just in the heat of the moment. He’s not one of these guys that does the finger to the skies thing. More like Ryan Howard. Just like his idol Barry Bonds, he kisses his fingers and points to the sky, like God Almighty had anything to do with it.

      • jjschiller - Jun 8, 2011 at 5:07 PM

        *heavents.

      • jjschiller - Jun 8, 2011 at 5:18 PM

        Also, *Godt.

      • jwbiii - Jun 8, 2011 at 6:16 PM

Did Bonds do that before his father died?

    • cur68 - Jun 8, 2011 at 6:24 PM

Cool J5. Tell Sparky I wish him luck. I hope the Blue Jays have a scout is in the crowd.

  7. Brian Murphy - Jun 8, 2011 at 4:06 PM

Nitpicking, but to whiff means you have to swing and miss. If Harper struck out because of borderline call, that wouldn’t seem to fit the definition.

    Man, I am bored.

  8. spudchukar - Jun 8, 2011 at 4:10 PM

The manner in which Harper delivered his “kiss”, supports this scenario. From the beginning it looked much more like payback.

I think Craig needs to blow a kiss to Tiffany during the next HBT Daily video.

  10. natstowngreg - Jun 8, 2011 at 6:23 PM

As I suspected. But there wasn’t a clip available of the pitcher’s behavior, was there? Of course, if it wasn’t recorded for posterity, that’s not Craig’s fault.

Harper should not have done what he did, but sorry, this obsession with one gesture is getting pathetic. Enough already.

Gee, where’s all the righteous indignation over the Pitcher blowing a kiss at Bryce Harper? Where’s all the judgmental articles, the re-hashing of the “Harper has character issues” articles, the video clips by Ken Rosenthal?

Oh yeah, that’s right. Only Bryce Harper isn’t allowed to actually be human and react when he’s (by most accounts) had to deal with daily provocations from opposing teams.

Every Harper at bat is the 7th game of the world series for every bush league, going nowhere low-A ball pitcher who just wants a Harper strikeout as a trophy for his soon-to-be-ending minor league career. Harper’s in a constant no-win situation, just as he was in Juco (when he was blamed for his two ejections without any consideration of what led to them).

I was just admiring his seventies porn star mustache.
