This was a great pickup by Cashman. They were worried about his durability to begin the season, which is why he began the season in the bullpen and Freddy was in the rotation, despite Colon thoroughly outpitching him in spring training. Sad to see this happen to Colon, he was having a great season. With his injury history, I'm skeptical if he can bounce back by the end of the month. Now through the All-Star break is going to be crucial for the Yankees to stay within shouting distance of the Red Sox. Whether they can do it with only one dependable starter and AJ Burnett is another story.

In defense of Brian Cashman and Yankees brass, other than Cliff Lee, this wasn't exactly a banner free agent crop for starting pitching. Heck, Bartolo has turned out to be the second best FA starter signed.

Thanks. I do not normally say that kind of stuff about other teams players, but since he spent the first 8 1/2 years of his pro career in the Indians system, I feel like I am justified in commenting. Just do a Google Image search for Bartolo Colon Rookie. You will not believe what he looked like back in the day. Sadly, this guy could probably have 2 or 3 more Cy Youngs right now if not for his weight problem, which has caused most of his injury problems over the years. Just no conditioning whatsoever. This guy makes David Wells look fit.

Don't look now Yankee fans, but the Red Sox stallion has left the barn and is about to gallup away from you in the AL East race... and all Hank and Hal will let Cashman do is to trawl the waiver wire and bring in the likes of bust Jeffrey Marquez to save your beleaguered pitching staff!

After all, the kind of proven veteran pitching help that we all know the Yankees desperately need will mean assuming a bigger contract or two as well as trading at least a mid-level or top prospect or two. Are Hank and Hal committed to winning? Right now, I don't think so!

The only thing that surprises me is that Colon and Garcia are breaking down this year even before the All Star break. Too bad for Yankee fans that Hank and Hal appear to be too CHEAP to bring in needed pitching help!

As a semi-Yankee fan, and therefore rational, I do not find this info all that distressing. Colon has been flat out great, arguably All-Star worthy. But with his age, history of injury, and recent shoulder surgery, a brief stint on the DL, may be a blessing in disguise. It is doubtful, that he has 35 starts in him. And it may force the Yankees to emerge from their collective delusion that Garcia/Colon/Novia will suffice, if even for the short term. As difficult as it may seem to the New York faithful, management must decide if this season is worth fighting for. If so, they will have to depart with one of the B's. Despite the hype, no one else in their organization will bring them the starter they desire. Hughes' return to form is questionable at best, and I for one have always considered him overrated. He just doesn't have that much movement on his fastball, and his complimentary pitches are average. I am not convinced the Red Sox hurlers are good enough to run away with the divsion. They are hot now, but some of the bats will cool. Soon we will be entering the dog days of August, when runs become scarce. Then it is September and if close, it becomes a crap shoot. We all know, that once the post-season becomes reality, pitching dominates. If the Yanks want to be players, they must make the move now, so they can position themselves be legitimate contenders later.
