Oswalt is the new Andy Pettite/Roger Clemens. That is to say, it appears at if he's just punching a time card with a lot of disinterest waiting for the playoffs. it would surprise me at all to see him opt out of his end of the mutual option on his contract at the end of the season and then tell the Phillies that, like Clemens did with the Yankees, he wants the team to provide for and pay for a private plane so that he can go home in between starts.

I don't like the guy at all, and it has nothing to do with the Phillies. I think that he's a real Prima Donna and hope that he gets his brains kicked in come playoff time.

APBA... last nights performance by Gio was even worse than what you portray. In addition to Gio issuing 7 walks, he also hit a batter, got called for a balk and threw two wild pitches. I don't think that he could have found home plate if the baseball had a built in GPS detector.

The White Sox didn't capitalize on their opportunities because Gio was "effectively wild", in that the batters had even less of an idea as to where the ball was going than Gio did. It also doesn't help that Alex Rios and Adam Dunn have been mired in year long slumps.

Rios though is showing signs of finally breaking out of it and Dunn just hit a 2 out 3 run homer off the A's that went half way to Indiana before it finally came down.

I'm feeling less and less confident about Oswalt every time he pitches. He seems to have lost his groove he was in earlier this year. 3 runs in the top of the 1st isn't good, but he looks like he's settled down at least now.

I just want to understand clearly what it is you're asking, sunsetsider. You're asking whether a nonpareil coffee grown organically in super-rich volcanic soil in the shade of the Palo Santo tree along a ridge on San Cristobal Island, lovingly hand-picked and sun-dried on wooden racks, then vacuum-sealed in foil-lined bags and packed in ecologically friendly wooden humidors with the desiccant pouch outside the inner bag and lovingly ground one potful at a time is as good or better than a very good mass produced commercial coffee of indeterminate provenance with mere flourishes and gestures to "naturalness," is that correct?

First the White Rabbit and now Gio returning to their rookie year form, which is lots of walks. Gio also was gifted with the 2011 Bonus Edition of the A's, 3 errors. Somehow, Chicago still only managed 3 runs, but that was one more than the punchless A's could produce.

What could be a pertinent Yankee comment today? Pitching for the moment looks as suspect as Opening Day, but we lived through the trauma so far.
Beep beep needs 9 hits for 3000 and some kind of national holiday will break out, along with a parade in the Canyon of Heroes. Maybe Grumpy could trade uniforms, because according to my precise calculations, with 5 ABs per game, the incumbent needs a .360 batting average to make it before the end of the homestand. Think we'll have to wait, with baited breath, for the Cubs or Reds.
Anyway, we need out home runs to keep coming anyway, not dribblers that can periodically make it out of the infield. Put the over/under on that at -3 to GIDP.
Good luck anyway, Derek Sanderson Jeter, Esq., Lld.

Coda: got some liquid pacemaker into my system - in this case shade grown Galapagos coffee imported directly from the islands via I-Gourmet. Does wonders for your outlook.

Anyway, just watched some film (do they still call it that?) of the Iron Giant's bomb last night. For distance, not extraordinary - a measley 450 feet or so - but the damned thing flew completely out of the upper range of the camera and must have reached apogee well above the roof of Joeprodolsharklife Stadium. I've sent up Estes rockets that didn't get that high. Sheesh.

I can't comment with any authority on the Feesh fiasco last night because it had gotten so ugly during the fourth inning that I turned off the radio and went to a friend's retirement party. 35 years of teaching high school math in the Macondo public school system and she still has a sense of humor and some semblance of her sanity left. When I got back to my car for the ride home I turned on the radio and heard the really really bad news. Some of the dishes at the Very Large Array had detected an unusual pulse from the strange attractor a little after eight PM, just about the time Javy walked out to the mound to begin the fourth inning.

I suppose the three home runs the Feesh wasted trying to clean up after Javy Vasquez wilted in the pulse and melted down like a one-man Chernobyl were a hopeful sign for a reawakening offense after the slap in the face of the Mallee firing (and incidentally, according to a couple of local Feesh blogs and comments on radio talk shows, there is continuing underground rumbling in the clubhouse about that firing - which indicates that perhaps Logan Morrison had checked with his teammates before he made his negative comments about it three days ago). But those late homers after the shellacking Javy and Brian Sanches took from the Snakes would be kinda like Harry Truman playing with firecrackers after Mount St. Helens began to erupt. (Sorry for the extenuated analogy - the OJ Simpson discussion on an adjacent thread has me walking down memory lane this morning. I haven't had by liquid pacemaker yet.)

A former (and relatively recent), Cy Young Award winner (Colon), regain his health (at least temporarily), due to successful experimental stem cell treatments is indeed a story, but that doesn't make it the feel good story of the year by a long stretch. When I mean long stretch, I mean that we still have roughly 2/3rds of a season to go and Colon appears already headed back to the disabled list, where he's spent the vast majority of his time in recent years.

I'll just give you one feel good story of the year that makes the Colon story pale in comparison and this is the one about Phillip Humber. Humber was the 3rd overall pick in the entire MLB draft in 2004, underwent TJ surgery in 2005 and then was the cornerstone key to the Santana trade to the Mets by Minnesota.

Minnesota gave up on Humber and KC signed him as a free agent late last season and brought him up for a cup of coffee in September, only to then turn around an put him on waivers. Then Oakland claimed him on waivers, but put him back on waivers about a month later and the White Sox claimed him.

This season he's gone from being a top prospect gone bust to be the anchor of Chicago's starting rotation. 'Nuff said.

Ok, thanks. How does the fanbase respond to Matt Holliday? Particularly ever since he dropped that fly ball in the NLDS. I'm sure he gets cheered at the games and all, but is there an underlying current of bitterness surrounding him?

Red Sox offense is insane right now. They now lead the majors in runs per game.

Their pitching on the season is still only okay overall, but it could improve with Dice-K out, and Lackey looked very good yesterday in his return from the DL. More importantly, the offense should be enough to get them to the playoffs, at which point the front of the rotation is all that matters. And Beckett/Lester/Buchholz is a very strong front three.

Of course, we're also still only 40% of the way through the season. There's a lot of baseball to be played.
