who should the Yankees have gone or should go after? A proven veteran pitcher and there are several who I'm sure would be available for the right package or prospects including Dempster (Cubs), Buerhle and Jackson (White Sox), and Soriano (Twins). I'm sure that the real issue is that the lowest paid pitcher of this group still makes $8.5M/year.

Simply put, the Yankees aren't going to be able to keep pace with the Red Sox, much less even make the playoffs, with a back end of their rotation being Nova, Garcia and Colon. Garcia and Colon haven't been able to stay off the DL come the dog days of August for several years now, and they aren't getting any younger.

"ALL of the Yankees acquisitions since then have been low salaried, reclamation projects. Bottom line? Hank and Hal simply don’t want to spend any more money."

Just curious- besides them making Soriano the highest paid reliever signed this offseason- who else should the Yankees have gone after exactly?

You think blowing up this Jeter story is over the top? Try living here in the LA area during basketball season. Out here we get subjected to hours and hours of drivel ranging all the way from where useless Luke Walton was seen dining the night before to what some scrub in the D-League could do for the roster. Can you say: "Laker fatigue"?!!!

It was clear that Hank wasn't about to give Jeter and "A-Rod" type deal and only BEGRUDGINGLY gave Jeter the big deal that he got, as he and Hal didn't want to face the enormous fan backlash that would have resulted had Jeter gone elsewhere to attain his 3000th career hit.

I'm not referring though to the Yankees retaining their own aging players, but what they've done in terms of player acquisition ever since Hank jealously commented on Jeter's new mansion in Tampa. ALL of the Yankees acquisitions since then have been low salaried, reclamation projects. Bottom line? Hank and Hal simply don't want to spend any more money.

After having the biggest payroll in baseball year after year, after re-signing Jeter for $51 million and Rivera for $30 million this offseason, after giving $35 million to setup man Rafael Soriano, after offering the most money to the best available starting pitcher, the Yankees are cheap?

Actually, I think the Yankees look like geniuses right now for 1) not breaking the bank for whatever mediocre starter was available after they lost Lee, and 2) getting great production for 21 starts from Garcia and Colon, whom everyone thought were washed up. Even if those two never pitch again this year, the Yankees have already gotten a great return on their investment.

I'm sorry. Im an east coast guy and my team gets plenty of attentionj so I never get into the whole "east coast bias" thing and I don't care that the Yankees dominate the coverage on espn, etc...........until tonight. You would have thought that the President was shot to death by an Iranian sniper with the coverage ESPN gave a .....calf strain. Are you kidding me?Everyone speaking with a somber voice, Girardi being interviewed to get his deep thoughts on this.....calf strain. This is one of those times where I wish everything that the sports reporters and manager said was put through the truth-o-meter so we could hear what they actually wanted to say. "Wow, why are we making such a big deal about a 2 week injury for a guy with next to nothing left who is hanging on just to get his 3000 hits?" What did Girardi actually say once his words went through the truth-o-meter? "Gee, you know what guys, lets face it. Jeter really adds nothing to our team at this point so to be truthful with you I'm glad I can pencil someone in who might actually contribute. And by the way, to think we have to play this guy for the next 2 years because of his absurd contract makes me and ownership vomit."
