Wily Mo Pena is coming back to the big leagues

Wily Mo Pena hasn’t seen any major league action since 2008, but he has been absolutely destroying baseballs at AAA for the past two years, so it was only a matter of time before someone gave him a shot.  The Diamondbacks are giving him that shot, having just purchased his contract from AAA Reno, reports Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona. The plan is to use him as a DH when the Dbacks hit the American League parks starting tonight.

Pena has an insane line of .363/.439/.726 with 21 homers in 63 games in Reno. While over half of his games have been at DH, he has played some first base and outfield too, so it’s not out of the question that Kirk Gibson could try to find a place for him in the event he keeps raking in the majors.

I saw him hit a ball about 500 feet in batting practice at Chase Field in 2007 w/ Boston…it did not look like it was going all that far, and then it hit off of the support cross bar for the scoreboard…

The only person happier about this than Willie Mo and his family is…..Tim’s Neighbor.

This is great. I find everything about WMP to be comically wonderful. He is pure happiness. He is a human happy making machine. Oh, what a glorious. WMP in the bigs again, in the WMP way.

Wilson, your love of WMP is contagious.

    Wilfredo Modesto Peña, Supergenius.

He should not be dismissed lightly. It’s tempting to say that he’s Sam Horn II, but if he learned the strike zone just a little bit, Wily Mo could be a beast. The Red Sox traded for him and never gave him a chance to play (Francona obviously didn’t trust him), then he went to Nationals and got hurt. He’s a great guy, and I’m crossing my fingers for him.

And, Willy Mo just launched on into the center field fountains in KC. Just incredible.

Wily is like the version of me I would be if I had what it took to be an MLB ballplayer. Wily Mo got power. Its a long way to the fountain at Kaufman.
