UPDATE: Jonathan Sanchez placed on disabled list with biceps tendinitis

Getty Images UPDATE: Well, Jonathan Sanchez was pulled from the Giants’ rotation. Just not for the reason we thought.
According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, Sanchez has been placed on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis. Zito will be activated from the disabled list to start the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday and figures to remain in the starting rotation until Sanchez is healthy and (more likely) effective.
9:32 AM: Remember what I wrote last night about Barry Zito going to the bullpen following Tuesday’s spot start?
Perhaps that talk was premature.
After Jonathan Sanchez allowed three runs and walked since over just 4 2/3 innings last night against the Indians, Giants manager Bruce Bochy told Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News that the struggling southpaw may get a break from the starting rotation.
“Just watching him, I can tell he’s lost some confidence,” Bochy said. “It’s just not happening. He’s all over the board, and that’s not him. We may keep throwing him out there. We may back him off. We’ll see. But getting (Barry) Zito back does give us that option.”
Sanchez has a 3.81 ERA through 16 starts this season, which doesn’t sound too bad on the surface, but he currently leads the majors with 59 walks over 89 2/3 innings. He has walked at least five batters in four out of his last five starts and hasn’t completed seven innings in a start since May 28.

I think now is the time to put Sanchez in the bullpen for a couple of weeks before the All Star break.
I watch every Giants game and in my opinion Sanchez has nowhere near the focus you need to have on the mound to be successful.
And to the people that think a bullpen stint is a statement that Zito is better. No it is not. Nobody in their right mind thinks Zito is better.
Zito is coming off the DL so this would seem to be the right time to give Zito 2-3 starts and see if Sanchez can work out his control issues.
Amazingly Sanchez has an ERA under 4.00 but that is deceptive since he has not pitched more than 6 innings since the end of May. He can thank the bullpen for stranding many of his inherited base runners keeping the ERA down. But he is definitely putting extra stress on the bullpen will likely hurt the team later in the season.
His 25 walks in 25 2/3 innings in June is unacceptable.
The bottom line in my opinion is Sanchez has All Star caliber stuff on the days he has command but the command has been virtually nonexistent in 2011.
