I understand that--he's only going to play when the team is up or down by 4 or 5 runs, maybe make an emergency start, or come in the game when AJ Burnett gets shelled, which will happen eventually. But I'd rather see a prospect--even a fringe one--play that role. But of course they won't do it, because then you have to waste an option on a guy you know is only going to be sent back down. All the same, this guy is still riding on one string of effectiveness with the Marlins under Girardi's tenure. That was years ago, in one of the most notorious pitcher's parks in the game, when he was on PEDs. I can understand some craptastic team signing him and hoping for the best, but what can he possibly offer the Yankees? Nothing. He's a substandard player and a waste of a roster spot.

He will be the 11th or 12th pitcher on the staff. Nobody is look for him to be an ace. The kids should be playing every day or every fifth. With Colon and Hughes coming back litre allows the Yankees to ship Nordic and maybe even nova to AAA while giving the big club a competent long man/garbage time pitcher.

Oh, good god. If Mitre isn't the worst player in MLB, he's somewhere in the running. Joe Girardi was his manager in Florida, and when the Yankees originally acquired him, I thought maybe Girardi had seen something at that time and knew something the public didn't. I gave him a bit of a pass, but Mitre never delivered. And yet he keeps coming back, not with Pittsburgh or Kansas City or Washington, but with a perennial playoff team. How is this possible? Is he Hank Steinbrenner's illegitimate son? Does he have compromising photographs of Brian Cashman sexting some intern? I think MLB has expanded beyond the talent pool--there are four more teams than there were as recently as the early 90s. That means there are 100 guys who would have been considered minor league-level talent when Omar Vizquel, Jim Thome, Arthur Rhodes, Matt Stairs and Tim Wakefield were already in the majors. That's not that long ago. Mitre is a minor leaguer wearing a major league uniform.

Colon is back Saturday, Hughes back next week, Soriano soon, Mitre back on the team, this means Noesi probably goes back to AAA and Nova to the 'pen. Starting to look like a pretty good staff again.

I always saw an upside to Mitre, he was never 100% physically when the Yankees had him, but there were signs of a solid innings eater. When that sinker is working he can be tough. He's had enough time for that shoulder to be completely healed so we'll see what he has this time around. Hell, he can't be worse than Javy Vazquez.
