The Mets sign Miguel Batista

Jul 4, 2011, 5:00 PM EDT

Miguel Batista

He’s close to free, and given that he’s a big fancy author, he may add some color to the clubhouse, but given that Miguel Batista was averaging 5.83 walks and 15.43 base runners per nine innings when the Cardinals let him go, I’m not going to get too excited about the Mets signing the veteran to a minor league contract.

If he throws a few lights out extended spring or simulated games or whatever, sure, he may actually come to New York, but I would bet you dollars to donuts that the next time we post about the guy, it will be “The Mets release Miguel Batista.”

For being in the NL east, I gotta tip my hat to the Mets for having as good of a season as they are. I expected them to be well below .500 halfway through the year, but to be at .500 and not have Wright for a lot of the year, and to not have Santana any of the year, they’ve made things interesting. That being said, go Rockies!

If the Cardinals let a pitcher loose, you can bet he’s either a bum or he’s finished. If Dave Duncan can’t help him he’s a throw away.

I can’t believe this move by the Mets. He was a joke for the Cards. We loved to see him get into the game. How can he help anyone now. He is not 25 years old.
