Kevin Youkilis is back in the lineup tonight

Kevin Youkilis

Kevin Youkilis, who missed yesterday’s game after being plunked on Monday, is feeling better and is back in the lineup for tonight’s game against the Jays. One hitch: he’s playing first base, filling in for Adrian Gonzalez, who is apparently just getting a day off.

Query: why does Terry Francona give Gonzalez a day off now rather than last week when he was having problems fitting David Ortiz into the lineup in NL parks?

Eh, he’s got two rings. I suppose I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

The long national nightmare is over!

yeah its a serious head scratcher that he gives him a day off three days back into AL play when all Sox fans heard for weeks was complaining about trying to get Ortiz into the lineup during interleague.

Answer: Sox are playing better now. Last week everyone was in a slump and we needed as many bats as possible to try to pull out of it. Now we are back to playing decently. And anyway, Wakefield is either on or off: he will either shut them down with the good knuckler or he will be throwing batting practice, in which case one bat won’t make a difference either way.

Bet me to it, it wasn’t an odd decision to not rest Gonzalez – the Red Sox were scoring no runs.

Heh, re: Wake…you got that right!

It’s humid as hell in New England right now, so maybe that knuckleball will be dancing.

That makes no sense. You’d rather have Papi than Yamaico Navarro any day, slumping or not, Wakefield or not. And yet Francona decided not to give A-Gon the day off when Papi could have replaced him, and now his replacement is Navarro.

The whole team is hitting better right now, that’s the main point, one which you cannot disagree with. That’s the meat, the rest was veggies, not even potatoes.

I agree the whole team is hitting better. I disagree that means you make a terrible lineup decision that doesn’t help your lineup then and hurts it now.

That said, Boston’s lineup still kicked arse tonight.

Francona has always saddled Wakefield with a B team whenever possible. I used to think that he figured, “Hell, Mirabelli’s in there, what the hell?” It’s strange, but It has been a pattern forever—actually less this season than in the past.

Can Youk make a start? It looks like it’s coming to that.
