I agree the whole team is hitting better. I disagree that means you make a terrible lineup decision that doesn’t help your lineup then and hurts it now.

That said, Boston’s lineup still kicked arse tonight.

Francona has always saddled Wakefield with a B team whenever possible. I used to think that he figured, “Hell, Mirabelli’s in there, what the hell?” It’s strange, but It has been a pattern forever—actually less this season than in the past.

That makes no sense. You’d rather have Papi than Yamaico Navarro any day, slumping or not, Wakefield or not. And yet Francona decided not to give A-Gon the day off when Papi could have replaced him, and now his replacement is Navarro.

Answer: Sox are playing better now. Last week everyone was in a slump and we needed as many bats as possible to try to pull out of it. Now we are back to playing decently. And anyway, Wakefield is either on or off: he will either shut them down with the good knuckler or he will be throwing batting practice, in which case one bat won’t make a difference either way.

yeah its a serious head scratcher that he gives him a day off three days back into AL play when all Sox fans heard for weeks was complaining about trying to get Ortiz into the lineup during interleague.
