I think it was damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I'm pretty sure it was going to backfire on him anyway. There's no reason to believe that after allowing 9 base runners and walking the pitcher KK would have gotten into a groove to retire the middle of the order in the 6th facing it for the 3rd time around. In which case I probably would have let KK go out and either perform or implode. Right now the bullpen is in shambles.

Funny post about the A's, Sizemore providing all the offense. Funny because the A's got 5 runs in 3 games against Seattle, while the Mariners went crazy and scored 7 to take the series two games to one.

Of course in the 3 series so far this season the A's have seen the King 3 times. He's been royal 3 times. And the A's "offense" has been nonexistent, which it's been most of the season.

Oakland now ranks second in team ERA and Seattle 5th. That's nice, except that the Mausoleum and Safeco are profound pitcher's parks. Whereas Philly ranks 3rd with virtually the same team ERA as the A's and their ballpark is hitter-friendly. The World Champion Los Gigantes are 5th in a pitcher friendly park as well. But the number 1 team ERA team is Atlanta.

Looking at those teams and looking at the offense Atlanta and Philly are relatively close. Only .006 OPS points separate the two at .695 and .701 respectively good for 21st and 19th ranking among MLB teams. SF is 25th at .672, Oakland is 27th at .641, and Seattle is dead last at .626.

Yet only Oakland has a losing record. Looking at run differential, Oakland and Seattle have negative values at -12 and -5. The other 3 teams are positive, +8 for SF, + 61 for Atlanta, +78 for Philly.

So for the second half of the season, it looks like Oakland and Seattle won't score enough to threaten Texas in the West. SF can win the NL West, but won't score enough to beat either Atlanta or Philly in the post-season, as both pitch better than SF does and score more runs.

Oakland is close enough to Seattle to perhaps finish 3rd in the division, rather than last, but as long as Seattle can run the King and Pineda out to the hill they likely will avoid long losing streaks, something that Oakland cannot guarantee for themselves.

Yankee fans, there were multiple hit batters last night. The last time that happened, so many of you were up in arms about what monsters the Red Sox and Indians were for hitting the pinstripes:

"How dare they?!"
"Be more careful!"
"Won't somebody think of the children?!"

I thought for sure this morning you'd all be declaring that Phil Hughes be suspended and that Joe Girardi would be right there with you. Or perhaps at some point during last night's game, you realized that sometimes guys get hit and it's not a big deal?

Does this mean the next time Mark Teixeira gets the flap of his jersey touched up with an 82 MPH breaking ball the rest of us can be spared half a dozen of you whining about it???

I loved BSG.

It is pretty obvious the writers were winging it after awhile, and had no plan for where the show was going to go. Sometimes that doesn't matter, but BSG has a very strong continuity -- it'd be almost impossible to watch it out of order -- so the seams show a bit. Nonetheless it's still one of my favorite shows.

And yes it can get dark and depressing as anything. Might want to watch some Astros games to prepare yourself. (If you've been a Pirates fan over the last 20 years, you're already set.)

Actually I don’t think it is right to be so dismissive of anyone’s choice to watch a particular TV show. There are always going to be people who like a TV show and there will be people who don't like a TV show. That said, I was not a fan of BSG from the beginning, but I started watching about halfway thru the series. I had been reading what a well done show it was, so I wanted to see what it was all about. I ordered the mini-series and then the first 2 seasons on Netflix, so when season 3 came around I was all caught up. I found that I really liked the show. The characters were strong, particularly Adama, Gaius Baltar, Colonel Saul Tigh and Starbuck. Gaius Baltar was just an awesome character, and should go down in history as one of the most unlikely but best villains in TV history. The characters wrestled with the questions of God, racism and humanity, and it was very thought provoking on those subjects. I would say that near end there were definitely some filler episodes, but the ending was good. It is a rare TV show that doesn't "jump the shark" at some point but the overall body of work of the show is very good. And IMDB gives the show a 9.0, on 40,000 reviews, which is a pretty high rating, so someone must like the show. Oh yeah, the women are hot as well...Enjoy...

He just can't seem to come in and not give up runs. Why you bring him into a 3-0 game in the 8th inning is beyond me. As soon as I saw him, I knew he was going to give up at least two and then we would score some the next, but come up short because he put us in too much of a hole.

Thumbs up to Craig on this one. I wasn't too surprised to see the Fightins lose last night. Kendrick is always a coin flip. I'm not too worried about the Braves this weekend. Should just help the Phils lengthen their lead in the division. I'm still watching to see the Phils get Heath Bell by the way. Would be a good pick up if they don't think they'll be able to lock up Madsen, and it's fairly obvious that Lidge isn't gonna be who he used to be.

Pedro, what's wrong with you this year? Maybe you should give Jobu some more rum my friend...

Pedro Cerrano - .223/.316/.391/.706 8 HR/20 RBI in 244 PA

The Domo-nator - .239/.322/.410/.733 5 HR/14 RBI in 152 PA

Pedro is a better fielder, but the Domo-nator is hitting just as well this year. What's going on?

1. Is Battlestar Gallactica really any good? I'm not convinced just like I'm not convinced the Braves are overusing their setup man and closer.

J5...couldn't agree more on Mayberry. What do you think about the quick hook to our whipping boy KK? I thought, especially after Mayberry made it 6-3, he should have stuck with KK...try to get 6 more outs...then go with our studs Stutes/Bastid and get out of Miami with the sweep. The Uncle saw things differently though and went with Herndon, who really, really sucks. Yeah the errors and baserunning mistakes were bad. But the fact remains they had a 6-3 lead with their starter having thrown 81 pitches and given up 1 earned run through 5 innings. There was no reason to take him out. If he can't go out there for the 6th in that game, then why the ^$@^# is he even in the rotation???

Only justification I can see is the problem between peripherals and results. He has a really high GB rate as well as a decent K rate. Problem is he seems unable to get a K when needed or a double play grounder.

Either that or he has naked pictures of Cashman because there are plenty of guys in the minors who can do just as bad, if not better, than Mitre.

The Yanks need to get their hitting act together. As in, hit one, next guy hits one, repeat, repeat. And I don't mean bunting, Joe. Didn't see enough patience at the plate last night, letting Masterson pitch until the 8th.
The populace seems to think the "DJ3K" will be Friday night. My bet is on his second at-bat Saturday, at about 2PM EDT. Before you disallow this, kindly recall that ARod will hit #700 on August 4, 2013 in his second at-bat. Then review late July last year comments in this emporium. All are done through highly unscientific methods roughly involving the space/time conundrum.
No, I don't know what that means either.

On July 21st last year, the Phillies were 2 games over .500 and 7 games behind the Braves. Their rotation was Doc And Cole and Scrub, Scrub, Scrub. This year, they are 22 games over .500, 3 games ahead in the division, and the rotation is Doc and Lee and Cole and Worley and Scrub. I have no worries at all about the division. Now, once the NLCS starts, I'll be biting my nails. Until then, nothing to fear.
