Good point, SN. The stats for the year so far probably undersell what Swisher will produce going forward. (Although obviously Swisher is not as good as his last 6 weeks of play, either.)

Would love for the phils to trade one of their baby aces for him and put in him left instead of Ibanez and hit behind Howard. I think he would produce when he is not the primary RBI guy in the lineup.

Since June 1, Swisher is hitting .304/.414/.571. Beltran checks in at .294/.389/.497. Swisher’s got a 5.4 UZR compared to Beltran’s 1.0. Beltran’s probably better, but the aforementioned stats, as well as age/injury risk makes the gap not really too large.

It was a benefit to Beltran. He’d be more attractive to teams in free agency because he wouldn’t require the team signing him to give up a draft pick in return.

As for why the Mets allowed it… they wanted him and weren’t going to say no because of something that wasn’t going to have any ramifications until seven years down the line.

That said, in this case, it’s probably only letting the Mets or the team that trades for him off the hook. It would have been a huge risk offering Beltran arbitration, particularly given his current $18.5 million salary.

Beltran isn’t going anywhere. Alderson wants to keep the few remaining fans in the seats. KRod didn’t bring fans to the game like Beltran does. Beltran will get a 2 year deal by the end of the season. The Mets have no other better options and a bunch of money coming off the books.

As a Sox fan: good. Swisher is hitting .249/.367/.416. Beltran is hitting .285/.377/.503. In a much much harder park to hit in.

…but it does benefit Beltran, because now it won’t cost a team a draft pick to sign him (assuming he is a type A FA), which will increase the pool of interested teams as probably the salary teams will offer…teams generally don’t like to pay twice: money and players/picks….if they only have to pay once (money), they’ll pay more.

to this day i still do not understand the reasoning for the Mets to allow this to me in his contract. its not benefit to Beltran and can only hurt the Mets.
