Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn’t even thought about that. I used the ‘Sharing Toolbox’ that’s built-in on baseball-reference.com to eliminate extraneous columns and rows. Then I took the edited table and exported to html , ‘pre-formatted text’ and bbcode . So it ended up being the pre (up above) that worked best from that lot.

I’m not going to crazy with posting tables, but it would be nice to know what works. For one we don’t have a ‘preview post’ function and two I think having some references in the comments can add to the discussion.

I’ve seen a few people embed video, so I should have thought of the code block.

Actually, it probably wouldn’t work. It looks like blog software compresses multiple spaces. Maybe if you open a (code) block before you paste the table in you may have some success.

So, Derek Lowe, at ages 38 and 39 combined, is due to make TWICE as much money as Greg Maddux did at ages 38 & 39 (which was only in 2004 & 2005) with the Cubs – the Braves elected to not extend him after picking up the 2003 option for $14.7 Mil. Overall, Maddux earned $38M from Age 36-39, while Lowe will have pulled in a cool $60M.

Strangely enough the much less accomplished Lowe signed a 4-year/ $60M deal with the Braves in 2009 at age 36.

Me thinks the Braves are overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of moving on from Lowe.

The Win totals are pretty close for the 1st and 2nd season, but really it’s not even close who the better Pitcher is. Maddux accumulated a WAR of 10.3 over those 4 seasons. Lowe is currently at 2.6, with less than a season an a half to go until his age 39 season is complete.

All this is a just illustrates a good rule of thumb. It’s better to take a chance on a 1st ballot Hall of Famer with a tremendous track record of durability and performance, than to pass on him and over-compensate a few years later by over-paying for a slightly above average Pitcher.

yeah i should have included that it would be expected that atlanta would eat some salary. and yeah army it seems atlanta is WAY more interested in clearing the money than getting back good players, they just want that deal to go.

I would take that deal 100 times out of 100.

Heck, I’d take, Boesch for Lowe straight up. You can keep your prospects!

And I might even give you a mid level prospect if you’ll take Lowe’s salary too!

Only if the Braves eat the salary which they won’t do. Honestly, I think they would virtually give him away if the Tigers take on the entirety of his salary.
