I don’t mind Gillick, but being a proven winner means nothing to me. I’d rather take a flyer on a younger, more progressive type, possibly even someone with little-to-no baseball operations experience, a la Epstein/Friedman. Hendry is obviously old school, valuing RBIs and wins and saves and lefty run producers and what have you; I think a radical shift in FO direction is needed. Gillick helps, but whether he’s enough (especially if the rumors are true that Hendry may still play a role in the organization) is yet to be seen.

It has to come from the top down, Ricketts may be a fans owner and what he may be doing with the ball park is great. But there has to be a strong baseball businessman at the top who knows how to balance both sides of the game. Gillick is a proven winner, if this gets done next up has to be the acknowledgement of the mistake made at the manager level.

Take a look at Gillick’s record of achievement in baseball. Then consider that Angelos ran him off. Now look at the Orioles record since Angelos took over.
