The shunt sits in an area of the brain ventricle (there’s 4 of those) where cerebrospinal fluid is pooling (CSF). The CSF is supposed to flow freely between the ventricles and spine. Due to damage the flow can be impeded and collect causing hydrocephaly which means something like ‘fluid collecting in the brian’. Since an adult’s skull bones are fused the head cannot increase in size so the brain is squished rather quickly. Increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) causes the seizure. Placing a VP is a well known and oft carried out procedure the implications and outcomes of which are well understood. It drains the collecting fluid into the belly or chest once a certain pressure gradient is achieved. Many people, often children, are walking around just fine with a VP shunt so in and of itself the procedure isn’t terribly bad. The fact that he needs a shunt is of more concern.
