Then you get some aces in and all of a sudden Joey B gets bumped down to 4th and 5th in the rotation and, in addition to be compared to the aces, you think to yourself… he’s making how much to be our 4th/5th starter??? That’s ludicrous!!

So, I sympathize with Blanton, not b/c I’m a tad on the out of shape side… but he’s a good pitcher that had expectation levels so highly set b/c of the skill that was around him that, like kellyb stated, took criticism b/c he wasn’t an ace.

In fact, he’s a big part (no pun intended) of their World Series in 08. Hey, he’s not Roy Halladay, but that guy was a solid number 3 for most teams in the league. I like to pick on Blanton because he is fat, but I like him and he was a productive pitcher for the Phillies for a few seasons. He is no ace, but he kept the team in games and usually pitched very well down the stretch of the season. Also, he does have a World Series home run.

I really think Joe Blanton gets a bad wrap solely b/c he’s heavy! The guy came over in 2008 and pitched pretty damn well en route to a World Series championship for the Phils. In 2009, he had pretty good success as well, especially compared to other pitchers on the team, pre-Lee. In 2010, when the Phils got Halladay… and then Oswalt… I think Blanton being compared to them two, in addition to Hamels… just made him look worse than he really was. He definitely had a down year, don’t get me wrong, but he kept the Phillies in games, and usually the wheels came off in the 6th inning (Charlie needed to start planning for that!)

So, I get that his “out-of-shapeness” is pretty much causing him to decline as an effective pitcher, which, as it should, irk fans b/c he’s making so much money… but, I don’t think he should be anywhere close to Adam Eaton territory!

We could’ve seen Worley come up from Oswalt getting injured also. And if Blanton hadn’t gotten injured, I bet we would’ve traded him to the Yankees for Jesus Montero, which not only would’ve given us another good prospect, but also would’ve helped lower our team salary and made us more eligable to trade for a bigger contract guy without going over the luxury tax line. The only real reason seeing go down was bad was because we lost all trade value we would’ve had with him, and in our given situation, that would’ve been very helpful.
