No, it isn’t. There are 29 GMs competing with each other to trade for a guy….in such cases it is pretty easy to get good value. In the Cardinals situation, a good GM knows that you don’t do a deal that doesn’t improve your current roster and chances of winning….so anyone the Cardinals get would have to be a clear upgrade over what is already available AND would have to overcome the loss of Rasmus from the roster. In addition, smart GMs do not throw away a good player for a small increase in the odds of winning during a single year.

How do you define “excellent”. Last year, he was good until about June, from then on, he stunk up the place, and was benched for a good part of the end of the year. What kind of “great prospect” can’t hit over .250? However, if the birds like him, I say keep him and sink with him in the lineup.

I disagree you cant get a good haul for a guy when everyone knows hes gotta be moved. Take Manny for example, when things started to go wrong in Boston he was still a good player but everyone knew the team needed to move him. Should they have gotten a good haul for him? Yes. Did they? No.

The other 29 GMs got their jobs for a reason, and they know when theres blood in the water. Right now the Cardinals are bleeding and their eventually going to have to stop it or bleed out. Every team in the league will be there to patch them up but they’ll want double the price. The Cardinals will either have to pay it or die. Thats the way pro sports work.

yea it doesnt seem an equal trade but if a guy doesnt want to be there, is trying to force a trade, doesnt get along with the coach or people in the orginization, and isnt playing nearly up to his ability either bc he doesnt want to or bc all the drama is getting to him, they cant keep him around. The Cardinals cant let it turn into a club house cancer. And every other team knows it.

They know that the Cardinals will have to move him eventually. That know matter what Rasmus relationship with the team isnt going to get better its only going to get worse. Like benching him for nearly a week. That didnt make Rasmus like the Cardinals more. And things like that will continue to happen and probably escalate. Every team in the league knows it . So that automatically gives any team dealing with the Cardinals leverage. The Cardinals are the ones that need to make the move, so their going to get the short end of the stick.

It happens all the time in every sport. The team that has the problem child no matter how talented always is forced to take way less then what the guy is worth bc everyone knows their backs are against the wall. So everyone offers them well below market value which sets the new market. And the team cant wait for the market to rise back up bc the longer they wait the worse the problems which can lower the value even more.

And thats the world where Edwin Jackson and Matt Thorton are parts of “accelerated trade negotiations” for Colby Rasmus.

There is no doubt he leaves the functioning side of his brain in the dugout sometimes. And at other times he’s a game-changing one-man machine. Clearly needs a change of venue, but there is no excuse for the Card’s not getting a good haul for him. Thornton and Jackson(as a rental!) Yikes.

Exectamente PL, if the Cards ever needed a game to exemplify the Rasmus dilemma it was today. Rocket homer, couple of good at bats, and then with the game on the line, he fails to back up a throw to second as the runner is stealing, and then on a do or die play on a shallow fly ball to center he treats it half-assed. Colby if you do not make a great throw home we lose. The lack of recognition of the dire circumstance is Rasmus in a nutshell. Many things can be taught, but awareness, anticipation, and competing may well be beyond his capabilities.

Yeah, this is maddening sometimes. For example, when a runner is tagging on a fly ball, Colby doesn’t get set to throw at all….he catches the ball, looks to see if the runner is going, and THEN makes the throw…..he did this again on the final play of today’s game. Simply inexcusable.

The Cardinals have a 1B prospect in AA (Matt Adams) that is tearing the cover off the ball this year, who may well be considered a top 50 prospect by the end of the year.

If the Cards lose Pujols next year, wouldn’t it make sense to slide Berkman into 1st and Rasmuss into right. If they trade Rasmuss, I don’t understand why they would do it for a rental situation. They might end up with no Pujols, no Rasmuss, and nothing to show for it.

The White Sox had better include a pretty nice prospect in this deal as well. Rasmus was excellent last year, is struggling this year. So what?!? He’s 24, it happens. The Cardinals are going to give up a young player with a high ceiling for two months of mediocre Edwin Jackson (he’s a free agent at years end) and a pitcher who will give you 60 innings a year (albeit, a very good one).

The Cardinals are once again putting way too much faith in Jon Jay. His ceiling is much, much lower and he’s been hitting a much more Jon Jay like .273/.313/.381 the past two months. I guess we can add Jay to the list of players LaRussa ran out of town because he didn’t like the personally.

I say let Rasmus hang around the neck of the Cards. One the other hand, wouldn’t it be fun to see the back and forth between trasmus and Ozzie. he could show Ozzie how the game is to be played. It might make the game interesting again.
