Colby Rasmus to Blue Jays, Edwin Jackson to Cardinals in eight-player swap

Sounds like the other shoe is about to drop.

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post Dispatch the Blue Jays have agreed to flip Edwin Jackson to the Cardinals along with relievers Octavio Dotel and Marc Rzepczynski for center fielder Colby Rasmus. Buster Olney of ESPN.com says Toronto will also get Trever Miller, Brian Tallet, and P.J. Walters, while Corey Patterson is included in the package heading to St. Louis.

Jackson was acquired this morning from the White Sox along with Mark Teahen for Jason Frasor and Zach Stewart, so this is essentially a three-team trade with the Blue Jays kicking in a little something extra to make the second part work.

Rasmus’ ongoing feud with manager Tony La Russa made it clear that he wasn’t destined to be a fixture in St. Louis, but the Cardinals appear to be selling very low on a 24-year-old center fielder with elite upside.

Jackson is a solid mid-rotation starter, but he’s also a free agent after the season. Dotel is a solid setup man, but he’s also 37 years old. And if Marc Rzepczynski is the biggest long-term piece acquired in exchange for Rasmus … well, general manager John Mozeliak has some explaining to do.

Maybe time will show that Rasmus feuding with La Russa was a sign of much bigger future issues to come, but from a pure talent-for-talent standpoint this deal is a clear win for Toronto.

Aaron Gleeman, what da yah mean “..if all Toronto gets for Rasmus is Rzepczynski then blah, blah, blah”. FYI : Bottom line: Rasmus is a head case & good riddance. Cardinals need Marc. Rzepczynski actually has a head (a cool head, unlike Rasmus)….and Marc Rzepczynski has good left arm, and is young and can start or relieve. And the let me remind you, Cards practically got “the Zep” for free. What’s not to like about the deal for the Cardinals? IMO, Blue Jays loaned Marc out to a needy Cardinal pitching staff. You want a rumor? Try this one: Marc Rzepczynski will wear the BlueJays uniform again. Marc my word.

I agree, that utility arm made the deal. He’s a lefty!

Good move from AA. Second one in a few months. First, the Vernon Wells deal, which made look great, and now this.

Hard to believe AA was in the background while a total tool like JP Ricciardi was gainfully employed as a GM!

I know most of you guys are much too young to remember, however Lou Brock was nothing for the Cubbies, until traded to the Cards. The Cardinals traded a pitcher with great potential Ernie Broligo (or something like that) for Brock. The point? You never know about a trade until a year or so after the deals are done, to see how they worked out. It is nice to see how much everyone seems to know about the MLB, but remember, if either side of the trade thought they could get a better deal, they would have tried. Perhaps the birds asked the moon for Rasmus, but couldn’t get half way there because of his old man or attitude, or something else. Don’t assume they didn’t try. Probably no one else would give as much as the Jays. He is no Hunter Pence!
