Report: Phillies “had a deal” for Hunter Pence, but Astros “backed off”

At this point the Phillies’ strong interest in Astros outfielder Hunter Pence is no secret, but Jayson Stark of takes it a step further by quoting sources who claim Philadelphia “had a deal for him earlier in the week, only to have Houston back off.”

Stark couldn’t get confirmation of that from any Astros sources, but says “it’s believed the Phillies structured a deal around” their two best prospects, Single-A first baseman Jonathan Singleton and Single-A right-hander Jarred Cosart.

If that’s true and the Astros turned the offer down, their decision to keep the 28-year-old Pence and his good but not great .818 career OPS looks awfully questionable for a team that needs all the young, cheap, long-term building blocks it can get. That seems pretty close to “offer they can’t refuse” territory.

Methinks Wade is waiting for the Phils to include middle relievers in the deal.

We offered them Singleton AND Cosart (ridiculously dumb as it is) and Ed Wade TURNED THAT DOWN? Say whatever you want about the Lidge and Oswalt deals, but if that’s seriously the case then this may be Wade’s dumbest transaction with us yet. Pence is not worth that much to this team.

Amaro has him so twisted around it’s like Wade is waiting for him to LESSEN the return before he ships Pence east. My guess is he’s just gun shy.

      Amaro: Cosart/Brown/Singleton

      Wade: I dunno….

      Amaro: Cosart/Singleton…

      Wade: Ruben this isn’t fair!

      Amaro: Singleton…

Wade: I’ll take it! I’ll take it!

Sounds like Ed Wade is channelling some old Mandalorian Jedi Mind Trick resistance

He misheard NinJr. He thought he called him a simpleton.

      • Jonny 5 - Jul 27, 2011 at 3:05 PM

Wade said “That was too good of a deal Amaro. Keep that Simpleton guy.” ?

      • Utley's Hair - Jul 27, 2011 at 3:10 PM

Come on Rube…first you call me a simpleton and offer me a Cuisinart, all for six pence? Wait. Let me turn off my iPod…now, what?

      • heyblueyoustink - Jul 27, 2011 at 3:23 PM

Well, it’s not like we have any shillings to offer.

      • Utley's Hair - Jul 27, 2011 at 3:33 PM

Can’t we just give Schilling away?

Wade was holding out for Rizzotti to be added in with Cosart and Singleton.

    • drmonkeyarmy - Jul 27, 2011 at 5:45 PM

Speaking of Rizzotti; can the Phillies please just trade that guy. Trade him for another minor leaguer or a gift certificate to Applebee’s…whatever.

  6. russ99a - Jul 27, 2011 at 8:08 PM

Both the leaving and incoming owner of the Astros don’t want to trade Pence.

    Just kicking the tires.

    Can’t sell tickets with class A prospects…

Rizzoti’s gotta be worth a bag of balls, or a lifetime season ticket to the 700 level, or something!! The Big Piece (their words, not mine) stands in the way of him, Singleton, and Rico Brogna!!
