I can see your point. Span’s contract is quite favorable to the team. Although, they would control Storen for two more years than Span.

The Nats would be Nuts not to move Storen. Why the Twins are so “Closer-Needy”, is a better question. With Clippard around, who I am not so sure isn’t better than Storen anyway. There was some reports yesterday that the Twins wanted Lombardozzi in the deal, but I cannot see the Nats including him.

Span may be older, but he's not old. He's 27 this year and signed to a cheap contract. I'd rather control him for the next four years than Drew Storen.

Have we learned nothing about the value of closers, or the inconsistency of relief pitchers? If you can trade a reliever for an actual baseball player, you do it. Good move for the Nationals if they pull it off.

I don’t get it. Are the Nationals mortgaging the future in order to make it to .500 now? Sure, they should be willing to trade Storen, but why for older players? Especially Upton, who will be a free agent after next season.

This is god news. The girlfriend who doesn’t give a woot about baseball (although she made me proud this morning when I saw she actually facebook liked an article) was getting annoyed at my ranted about how stupid Bill Smith is to potentially get hosed in another reliever deal.

I’d rather we trade Delmon for a lesser reliever who is still serviceable and better than Capps. That’d solve some of our OF log-jam.

As someone watching this situation very closely, it is clear that the Nationals need to resolve an ongoing problem – OBP at the top of the lineup. Span is a great pickup for the Nats assuming he’s not the next Justin Morneau — concussions are nothing to mess with. Storen is a stud, but you have to give to get. As was the case with Ramos, Minnesota has a long term answer in the position they are considering trading away – Ben Revere will likely be as good or better than Span. What incenses me here is the inclusion of Stephen Lombardozzi in these talks – his OBP has been the same as Spans MLB numbers throughout his minor league career. So – trade him for Span straight up (or with cash) and include Bernadina as a backup – especially since the Lombardozzi family has good Twins history – OR trade Storen and Bernie for Span and someone who isn’t concussed (Capps?) – but all 3? Forget it – trade Desmond to Tampa Bay for Upton and bring Lombardozzi up instead. Mike, I hope you’re listening – CONCUSSION. It’s probably the only reason the Twins are even considering giving up a guy under team control for several years.

Denard Span has been a top ten centerfielder since entering the league in 2008 according to fWAR. bWAR agrees as well, and he has a team friendly contract through 2015.

That’s not exactly dime a dozen.

Agreed. This trade makes no sense. Storen was a #1 pick two years ago, and has been pretty much lights out in his first year as closer. Why would the Nats trade away a young guy like this? Regardless, if this trade does happen, does Storen become the closer on Minnesota, or is Gardy still partial to Nathan?
