Matt Stairs released

We kinda knew this was gonna happen last week when he was designated for assignment, but it’s kind of a bummer anyway: Matt Stairs has been released by the Nationals.

It’s probably retirement/hockey coaching time for Stairs who, at 43, managed only a .154/.257/.169 line with no homers this year.  Overall, however, he had a fine career, hitting .262/.356/.477 hitter with 265 homers.

Happy trails, Matt Stairs.

I really appreciated his time spent here in Milwaukee. You could tell just by looking at him that he was a hardworker who always hustled despite nursing hidden injuries.

Wrong. Nothing at all against Matt; I wish him well. But the Nats asked Stairs to do one thing — pinch hit. He failed.

        Bitter?

      • natstowngreg - Aug 1, 2011 at 9:07 PM

        Wow, that’s really lame.

Disappointed? Yes. Bitter? Why? Because I pointed out that he was no longer getting the job done? As in, hitting .154?

Good luck Mr. Stairs, you own my favorite titanic homerun of all time ( Broxton still has the chills at night ) followed by my favorite baseball quote ever.

    Thank you sir, thank you.

19 seasons, and only three where he was a full-time player. That’s really impressive. And he’s got a handful of really great moments for us to remember him by (to say nothing of the hair).

“But, when you get that nice celebration coming into the dugout and you’re getting your ass hammered by guys, there’s no better feeling than to have that done”

    Thanks for everything, Matt!
