It’s kind of fun to get confirmation that my brother wasn’t just telling me stories (although I still don’t believe the one about he and Louganis before the 84 olympics — my brother was cute, but not that cute. Sorry, bro.).

Welsh International rugby players, Australian Rugby league and English cricketers have taken that bold step several years ago. These guys are playing for a professional club, but have also made the next step up to the elite few to represent their entire country. I really hope athletes in the US and Canada can look to these guys for inspiration.

Well, duh. And if anyone wants to question Mr. Calcaterra, I have a life long friend who is gay, and has dated two former MLB players, one of whom had a pretty nice career. I’m sure not every gay man has a MLB notch or two on the bedpost, but considering 3.5% of Americans currently openly identify as homosexual, and as Craig said, there have been 6000 players in the majors since Burke, you don’t need to take my word for it.

After all the hoopla and hatred, the fans will still cheer him, the teammates will go to battle with him, and it will be the same as when Jackie Robinson entered the Major leagues. Those with hearts full of intolerance will stay away, but the real fans will cheer him because they know that the quality of a man is based upon his character, and the worth of a player is based on his performance not upon who he loves. I know a Pee Wee Reese will emerge, put his arm around his teammate, and let us all know that it’s ok that gay men play pro sports. I mean they always have, just in secret.
