I think the Yanks traded Melky Cabrera because he was at best a fourth outfielder with average skills on both sides who the Braves were willing to take for a #3 starter. Who wouldn’t make that trade? It didn’t work out but it hardly cost the future of the Yankees organization for a guy who has usually been a solidly productive starter.

Ahem. A followup to my comments this morning: Larry Beinfest was quoted on the Feesh’s web site this afternoon thusly: ” “He needs to concentrate on all aspects of being a Major Leaguer and work his way back.” That phrasing looks to me like a not so veiled assertion that he has to learn to keep his mouth shut – and demonstrates that being a good little boy is an implicit element of what the Feesh front orifice considers “professional” or “major league” behavior.

Marlins return Mike Cameron and his high performance .208 average to the lineup today to replace Morrison. Petey moves from CF to Left with Cameron in center.

Not far from horrible, but is it what he’s capable of? Probably not. Tweeter seems to have his head into a lot of extracurricular activities, almost all of them well-meant (assuming the self-promoting aspect of his online life could be considered beneficial to him as it is amusing to the rest of us). However, he’s been on quite the schneid this past month, which, from his manager’s point of view, could legitimately be viewed as a good reason to set aside these distractions and focus on his game.

This is not to argue for the way Scrooge McLoria’s factotums have handled this. They’ve gone about it in their usual clumsy, disingenuous fashion and disgusted yet another segment of their dwindling fan base in the process. But I’ll re-emphasize some of what I wrote below: if your playing has put you in an exposed situation, it doesn’t take a genius to realize that it’s a good time to shut up and bear down instead of ramping up your Signifying Monkey act.

A purely personal decision by Loria and Samson reminiscient of the Joe Giradri firing after Joe told Jeff to shut up during a game and stop heckling umpires. And consider it a victoiy for Hanley Ramirez – this inmate now runs the asylum – and oddly his recent splits are far worse than Morrison’s.

I’m sure that management consulted the Marlin fan before they acted.

Performance doesn’t seem to matter as the Marlins brought Volstad back from New Orleans where he had a 2.00 WHIP and a 7.00+ ERA in his last two starts in AAA.

I don't mind he speaks his mind but harping on one of the few legitimate stars the Marlins have is probably not helping team chemistry at all. I know Ramirez is having a poor season thus far, but, with injuries, its probably understandable and not something LoMo should be criticizing. Curtis Granderson manages to be interesting in interviews. He speaks his mind and no one gets upset with him. There is such a thing as tact you know. Maybe LoMo will think over his public comments while in baseball purgatory.

Really, cur? I’d much rather have an athlete speak his mind than give the scripted answers we constantly hear from players today. Most people criticize athletes for not being truthful and it seems disingenuous to say the way he interacts with fans is a negative thing. And as far as his production goes, for a 23-year old on a horrible team his batting line isn’t great certainly but is far from horrible.

Actually, Doctor, I believe it was Jason Michaels. This was when Bowa was the manager. He didn’t think Michaels was a good influence on Burrell, especially after Michaels was charged with hiiting a Philly cop down on South Street. Burrell was with him at the time.

Seen Helms’ numbers, hal? Frankly, I don’t understand what he was still doing on the active roster – or why, for that matter, they brought him back this season in the first place. Whatever he did or didn’t do this week, his performance has been embarrassing enough to warrant his release on its own. But after two years of promoting the wonderful influence on “the kids” of Kindly Uncle Wes’ veteran leadership, why not just make him a coach and begin grooming him for managerial duty some day? This front office is just a bunch of crooks and tinpot martinets.

See my comments in the initial LoMo post below. Notwithstanding, this was a punitive move. in terms of its impact on the on-field performance of the Feesh it reeks of contempt for the fans – ah, but how novel is that for the Feesh front office. The team they put on the field today is going to give Houston and Seattle a run for their money.

On the other hand, fan reaction to this episode has been pretty mixed. A lot of callers on Macondo sports tawk raydeeo this morning just think Tweeter ought to stop whining and learn to play and keep his mouth shut. I certainly agree he had no business calling Hanley out last week, and it’s true that any company can be expected to send a warning to any employees who don’t conform to their employer’s behavioral guidelines. And there’s got to be a tactical learning curve – if you know you’re working for dickheads, you should at least learn what the limits are, shouldn’t you? LoMo may be full of all kinds of integrity – that’s open for discussion but I know many fans think his outspokenness is well intentioned – but you also have to know when your bloviations become counterproductive and expose you to retaliation against which you have no real defense.

Here’s hoping that Tweeter uses his exile to do some reflecting. Since there’s nothing to do in New Orleans before or after the games – those rural backwaters can really get on your wit – I recommend he take a copy of Machiavelli’s The Prince and maybe On War by Von Clausewitz and study up on strategy while he’s over there.

Pretty much sums up what happened. Helms and Morrison probably did something boneheaded off the field and the Marlins took care of it internally. This is probably why they released Helms and sent Morrison down as a punishment.

He will be back by the end of the month. No doubt about that. Maybe it will clear the kid’s head.
