Delmon Young thinks it’ll be a cakewalk now

After being penciled into the third spot ahead of Miguel Cabrera in Detroit’s order in his first game as a Tiger, Delmon Young had this to say:

I’ve never been in that situation before, where I have a Hall of Fame-type player behind me

Except, you know, Jim Thome.  And hitting behind Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau doesn’t sound so bad either.

And why shouldn’t a guy hitting .266/.305/.357 with four homers in 305 at-bats get to hit ahead of a Hall of Famer? Of course, Young has never suffered from any sort of self esteem problems.

But we can pretty much guarantee this: the only way Young is going to see better pitches is by laying off the lousy ones.  It doesn’t matter whether he has Miguel Cabrera or Miguel Batista hitting behind him when he barely walks once a week anyway.

Cant be any worse then Magglio has been. Plus they gave up NOTHING to get him.

I think he meant hitting in front of a player who is playing at a Hall of Fame caliber now. Not Jim Thome, who has been a DH/pinch hitter for the past 3 or 4 years. Obviously Jim Thome is a Hall of Fame-type player…..but he is wayyyy past his prime. Miguel Cabrera is in his prime right now.

Tell Jim Thome he was past his prime last season.

He had 59 RBI last season and only had 276 AB’s. Obviously the Twins didn’t think he was good enough to give him more AB’s. He obviously is past his prime or he would have had closer to 500 AB’s and over 100 RBI.

From 1996 thru 2006 he had over 100 RBI in 9 of 11 seasons. That was his prime. He hasn’t topped 100 RBI since.

@The Baseball Gods, you’re an idiot. Thanks for playing though.

Looks like it will be a cakewalk. Solo home run in his first at bat today.

Of course the Twins won the game. Well played Mr. Thome!

Matthew, the Baseball Gods conspire against you. :-)

What he meant is that since he was on the bench half the time and no one hit behind him. And then when he did play he was so poor he was usually batting at the bottom of the order. If the Tigers have him batting third I wouldn’t be counting out the Indians or Chisox.
