MLB reduces Shane Victorino’s suspension to two games, beginning tonight

Aug 18, 2011, 4:50 PM EDT

Shane Victorino, Mike Muchlinski,Ramon Ramirez

Shane Victorino‘s three-game suspension from the Phillies-Giants scuffle on August 6 has been reduced to two games after the center fielder appealed to MLB.

He’ll begin serving the reduced suspension tonight against the Diamondbacks and will also sit out tomorrow night’s game against the Nationals.

Victorino was the only player who received a suspension, with MLB issuing a statement about his “aggressive actions that prolonged the bench-clearing incident between the clubs.”

Eli Whiteside, Placido Polanco, and Ramon Ramirez were each disciplined with fines.

Good…but still bogus that there were no suspensions for Whiteside and Ramirez—and a sentence for Sandoval to wear a preteen’s pink tutu.

    • thomas2727 - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:19 PM

I don’t recall seeing Whiteside or Ramirez pushing/bumping an umpire?

      • bigxrob - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:21 PM

stop, you don’t need to push or bump an umpire during a bench clear to be suspended.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:24 PM

1.) The ump held the Hawaiian. Besides, who doesn’t try to push their way through the guy holding you back, anyway? Human nature.

2.) Whiteside tried to take down a guy at the knees, which started the brouhaha.

3.) Ramirez instigated the incident by childishly hitting a batter because he couldn’t get anybody out, and then charged home plate instead of waiting to see if Victorino was going to charge the mound—which it was clear that he wasn’t going to.

      • Jonny 5 - Aug 18, 2011 at 9:06 PM

Preacher. Amen! Seriosly, Ramirez and Whiteside were both more out of control than Victorino. Ramirez ran at him after beaning him. Whiteside, what the F&^% was he doing tackling people? Polanco didn’t deserve that, for all he knew he was going to restrain some people ready to brawl. Oh well.

and a sentence for Sandoval to wear a preteen’s pink tutu.

      Pandas in pink tutus…

Did you see Schwimmer with the boa and Hello Kitty backpack last night?

      • FC - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:55 PM

Had to go to the 700 Level to find that pic. Craig is right, Hazing has gotten… uhh… lame… but that’s fine. That’s as it should be…

      • paulsdamnblog - Aug 18, 2011 at 6:03 PM

Looks like Sandoval put on some weight, but he’s looking more butch in that picture than normal.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 6:23 PM

        HAHAHA!!!!!!!

Hey, paulsdamnblog, you mentioned that you can’t get scrapple down there. Apparently Habbersett’s can/will be able to ship it.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:18 PM

Who in the hell eats scrapple? That stuff is nasty.

      • firedude7160 - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:51 PM

I think you ment to say “That stuff is delicious!”

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 12:09 AM

Scrapple is the salt-infused meat type product of the gods.

Howard is also not playing this evening….with Ross Gload starting at first base. This is his last chance in my book. If he hits a HR I will leave him be or 2 hits with one of the an XBH, or 3 singles. Also, no Ruiz. So, not sure what Charlie is going to do with the line-up….going to be tough to beat Ian Kennedy with whatever line-up he conjures up.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:02 PM

Is Howard’s absence due to his hand?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:03 PM

I would assume so. Charlie says that Howard is OK and will use him as a PH. Howard says that it is bothering him a bit but not enough to warrant any further testing. Seems minor to me.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:06 PM

Wait, Charlie says that it is just a day off for Howard. Seems suspicious to me, has to be hand related. Why else would they give him the game off with Mayberry Jr. sure to start in CF? I mean, they are starting a statue at first base tonight.

      • bigxrob - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:17 PM

I never believe anything the Phillies say about injuries. I don’t have a problem with them not being forthecoming, I’ve accepted it.

  3. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:08 PM

My prediction for the still unposted line-up
Rollins, Valdez, Pence, Utley, Mayberry Jr., Ibanez, Scheider, Worley, Gload

    • FC - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:12 PM

Has Charlie ever spotted a pitcher other than 9th in the Lineup?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:25 PM

        Doubt it.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:12 PM

You really like sticking nonpitchers in the 9 hole, don’t you?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:26 PM

No, I generally hate the idea. I was just trying to take one more passive aggressive shot at Gload.

    • bigxrob - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:14 PM

ugh, there is only 3 major leaguers out of the eight starters.

      • proudlycanadian - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:22 PM

Use Doc as a pinch hitter!

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:25 PM

I’d use Lee first, and Doc if a bunt is called for.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:27 PM

Doc has dramatically improved in the bunting this season. He must have worked hard at it in the offseason because he was awful at it last year.

    • bigxrob - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:34 PM

With a RH pitcher, I would expect Martinez over Valdez tonight

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:36 PM

You are probably right…he would also be better in the 2 hole, with less DP’s and all. However, I was giving him the start because he crushed that double last night.

  4. ncphilliesguy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:45 PM

Serously, it has to be Rollins, Martinez, Utley, Pence, Ibanez, Mayberry, Gload, Schneider, Worley. Doesn’t it? With that lineup and Kennedy, I think I’ll watch the Eagles.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:48 PM

That’s a hell of a choice. When’s the Union play?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:51 PM

Are you mocking the Union? I enjoy watching them play.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 6:02 PM

Not at all. Soccer is my my second favorite spectator sport. I was offering that as an alternative to the Birds. Alas, the Union don’t play until Saturday.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 6:05 PM

Really?? I follow soccer as much as I follow baseball. Looking forward to seeing how Adu integrates into the Union line-up.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 6:30 PM

Well, Adu turned out to be more or less a bust when he signed initially, so I’m cautiously optimistic.

But, I’m basically making my first forays into it, though. I didn’t get much of a chance to watch until recently. And I still have very little clue as to how MLS works—or any of the leagues for that matter.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 6:35 PM

Adu is a good player. He was always held back by being lazy and having a sense of entitlement. Playing for a tad in the Turkish 2nd division seemed to knock some sense into him. However, he is immensely talented and has a skill set that no other American possesses. Also, it is a myth that he failed wherever he went. Actually, he always played well when given the opportunity it was just that he couldn’t stick with a club because of the exorbitant salary given to him by his parent club. In the right system he can be a star.

      • kellyb9 - Aug 18, 2011 at 7:29 PM

Hair – the second best sport is clearly hockey.

  5. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:45 PM

The real line-up goes like this:
Rollins, Mayberry, Utley, Pence, Ibanez, Gload, Schneider, Valdez, Worley

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:47 PM

It must grate on you to put Gload at sixth

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:49 PM

I would have put him as far down in the order as possible. I hope Gload proves me wrong and goes crazy at the plate tonight.

      • Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 6:00 PM

I would be happy to see Gload moving around OK at first base tonight. I am surprised they are playing him a full game as he’s been pinch run for every time recently it seems.

    • ncphilliesguy - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:48 PM

3 lefties in a row. Shocker.

  6. Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 5:48 PM

Disgraceful that only Victorino misses time for this. The idiot pitcher who throws the purpose pith should have received at least a game. And whiteside should have got a game for jumping up and down like an idiot. Shane may have Prolonged the brawl but that suck-ass Ramirez is the only who Started the brawl. The Giants are a bunch of sissies and now I am starting to join my fellow phillies fans on hoping they get to kick their asses in the playoffs.

  7. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 8:36 PM

Anybody know if this storm is going to end…it is scary outside.

  8. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 9:44 PM

I’m starting to feel bad for Lincecum and Cain. They have to be virtually perfect to win. Lincecum is 11-10 with a 2.54 ERA….that is ridiculous.

    • FC - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:03 PM

      10 starts with 0 run support….ouch!

    • Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:07 PM

How about the Braves bullpen…I think somebody calls them O’VenBrel…those guys are lights out. You give them a lead through SIX INNINGS and it game over. Wow!!! Very sick. And it isn’t like their starters are chopped liver either. The playoffs are going to be awesome

  9. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:09 PM

It looks they are going to restart the game in about 15 minutes. They say Herndon is warming up in the bullpen so we have that going for us.

    • Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:12 PM

Herndon? Oh my. Im watching MLB Network…Stanton just hit a shot that one hopped the left field wall on a line. Jesus Christ that guy is a beast.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:15 PM

I saw that too. I always forget that he is only 21. That is ridiculous. Barring injury that guy is going to be something special…already kinda is. Yeah, I guess Herndon is the long man these days. Hopefully, he can give us 2 decent innings.

  10. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:19 PM

Game back on…Herndon looks confident on the mound. We shall see.

    • Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:20 PM

Shame because the Vanimal looked real good tonight. Hopefully Herndon doesn’t give back the whole 3 run lead

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:25 PM

Herndon is making me nervous. His slider has no bite on it.

      • Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:26 PM

Yeah that one to Young would have been hit into Ashburn Alley if he wasn’t taking.

  11. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:29 PM

Micah Ownings has a ERA in the mid 2′s…how about that. I remember him sucking ass when he was with the Reds. Good hitter though.

  12. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:39 PM

Herndon just strike out the side….did I see that right? Did I enter the Twilight Zone during that rain delay? Does Charlie tempt fate and bring him out for a 3rd inning….stay tuned.

    • Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:41 PM

He will almost definitely be out there for another inning…he should be. He’s the only long guy left in the BP with KK starting Saturday night.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:42 PM

        Yep…one more inning.

    • Chris Fiorentino - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:43 PM

When Utley is swinging the bat like that, this team is unstoppable.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:46 PM

Yep, when he is getting his hand through the zone. It is a sign that he is going to get hot. When he is going bad, he pops up the opposite way or hits lazy fly balls to left field.

  13. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:50 PM

Has Ibanez lost all sense of the strike zone this season?

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:50 PM

But he shouldn’t be looking for a walk here…with Gload on deck and all.

  14. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 10:52 PM

    Yep, Gload sucks.

  15. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:00 PM

Cy Herndon out there. Does Charlie send him back out there for a 4th inning?

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:02 PM

Nope, Stutes is obviously coming in the game.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:16 PM

        Pretty good move by Stutes.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:21 PM

I thought he had him. Yeah, Stutes is quick to first. Need to get more runs so we can see the debut of the 6 foot 8, 260 lb Michael Schwimmer.

  16. Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:20 PM

I thought trivia was supposed to be tough. What the hell was that question?

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:24 PM

Sometimes they are easy as to build up Wheels’ confidence.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:27 PM

My kid might be able to answer that one. Hell, it’s what spawned the walk off.

  17. Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:26 PM

Let’s bring ‘im home, Mr. Overrated.

  18. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:31 PM

Stutes has been making me nervous recently. Good move getting him out of the game.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:37 PM

Yeah, but he’s only been used sporadically recently, too, after just about nightly with MadDog on the DL.

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:38 PM

Bastardo quickly restores order because he is awesome.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:41 PM

MadDog warming up for the save.

  19. firedude7160 - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:38 PM

I would just like to point out that Mayberry has an odd batting stance. Many people start out with their feet the same way- shoulder width apart, with the toe of his front foot even with the heel of his back foot- but when he takes his leg kick he brings his leg up, then puts it back down in the same position. Normally, when completing their leg kick, guys will bring their foot forward so their feet are even. I don’t understand how he generates his power with that stance

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:40 PM

      But he does.

      • firedude7160 - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:49 PM

He does, yes. And I probly shouldn’t try to analyze his stance, but I can’t help myself. It is just so different

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:56 PM

Hell, look at Mr. Overrated’s stance. You can’t get much more odd than that one—unless you look at Youkilis, that is

  20. Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:43 PM

RAUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLL. O2 is on the way

  21. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:43 PM

Nice hustle by Ibanez. Guy is never short on effort. Another pop out for Gload to cap a 0-4 night.

    • firedude7160 - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:46 PM

Further proof that he needs to go

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:49 PM

This had to be his last chance, right?

      • firedude7160 - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:53 PM

God I hope so. How many more chances can the guy get?

  22. Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:45 PM

Really? When was the last time Ibanez stole a base? WTF, Patterson?

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:48 PM

Yeah, he was only a step off the base too. They were doing that yesterday too. I think it was to Schneider or some other guy who can’t move.

  23. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:46 PM

They are changing pitchers for Valdez? Really? I guess that mighty swing he put on Saunders last night has them scared of his raw power.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:49 PM

Hey, Valdez, another RBI or two would be nice.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:49 PM

Asking a bit much from him.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:52 PM

        Can’t hurt to ask, right?

  24. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:53 PM

Madson needs a clean inning. I don’t trust these bastards. They are prone to comebacks.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:53 PM

      Good start

    • firedude7160 - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:56 PM

They do like to strike late… (sarcasm intended)

  25. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:55 PM

In slightly, possibly related news…for the Iron Pigs tonight Cust hit is first HR and Brandon Moss hit his 22.

    • firedude7160 - Aug 18, 2011 at 11:59 PM

Why isn’t Cust up here taking Gload’s spot yet?

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 12:04 AM

‘Cause you can’t have cell phones in the dugout?
