Baseball’s playoff slogan: “Legends are born in October”

Aug 19, 2011, 3:03 PM EDT

Legends October

I can’t wait until the playoffs start. Excitement! High stakes!  Commercials that get run into the ground!

I doubt we’ll ever see anything as glorious as “her father is the district attorney!” again, but in recent years we have certainly gotten our fair share of MLB-produced promos that seek to brand the playoffs.  This years theme: “Legends are born in October“:  The link goes to a video. Here’s the upshot:

The campaign will feature the hit song “Written in the Stars” by Tinie Tempah as the backdrop to signature Postseason highlights and memorable moments from the 2011 season.  The Postseason heroics of Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Roy Halladay, David Ortiz, Brian Wilson, Aaron Boone, Mariano Rivera, Luis Gonzalez and many more will be featured in the campaign.

Oh, so it won’t be a literal thing about legends actually being born in October. Because, you know. John Lackey was born on October 23rd, and I really don’t think that’s what the folks at MLB are going for.

Even as a Yankee fan, I’m somewhat bothered that three of those explicitly feature the Yankees and, worse, two of those will likely feature something being done to the Yankees… I mean, I know you don’t want to have a big playoff campaign poster showing B.J. Upton, whose team is probably not going to make the playoffs, but really, you can dig past 2001 for these things, too.

Lackey’s going to come up big this October. You watch!

    • 18thstreet - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:29 PM

      Ellsboctover.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:31 PM

My post immediately below celebrating the brilliance of the above posts does not extend to 18thstreet….and his nonsensical attempt to copy off UH and J5

      • Jonny 5 - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:40 PM

LMAO!!! 18th street made me laugh. Ellsboctober….

        Lacktober?

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:50 PM

Lacktober sounds like something directly connected to birth.

      • Jonny 5 - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:55 PM

        Or lactose?

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:02 PM

        Lactober intolerance?

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:30 PM

Brilliant. Both of you, absolutely brilliant. If you didn’t catch it in the other thread Howard is back tonight and Ruiz is back from his testicular ailment.

      • Jonny 5 - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:42 PM

“and Ruiz is back from his testicular ailment.”

Dude stop saying that!!!! too funny…..

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:49 PM

Of course, somebody will draw a connection between Chooch’s er…um…problem with Howard’s hand injury, don’t you think?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:50 PM

No, I think you are the only one.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:01 PM

Hmm…having read a bazillion and 13 comments on HBT, I question that assertion. I’m sure I’m not the only one to have noticed that coincidence. Though Chooch just had a kid, and Howard’s significant other is kind of hot. Though not as hot as Jen Utley….

As long as the sheen in your hair, Hair, has nothing to do with either, it’s a don’t ask, don’t tell.

Maybe Cameron Diaz will be by looking to borrow some “Hair” gel ;-)

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:09 PM

Meh…any way we can change that to Megan Fox?

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:21 PM

Sure Hair, maybe even Christina Ricci or Susan Tedeschi if you please.

      • chadjones27 - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:26 PM

        @heyblue, nice Susan Tedeschi reference

      • heyblueyoustink - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:50 PM

Shhhh!!!! She’s a pretty well kept secret, no need to share her with the unknowing masses.

    • kellyb9 - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:54 PM

      Doctoberfest

      • Jonny 5 - Aug 19, 2011 at 3:56 PM

    YOU’RE RISKING A PATIENT’S LIFE!!!!

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:24 PM

For the patient’s sake, I hope this wasn’t supposed to be a work-related email or text or something…

      • churchoftheperpetuallyoutraged - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:50 PM

No, that was the following year’s FOX promo that was shoved down our throat. For a running list, just read any of Bill Simmon’s columns from a few years ago, he can’t stop talking about them.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 5:03 PM

Crap…I had forgotten about them. I guess it was a defense mechanism….

  8. natstowngreg - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:26 PM

Interesting that the picture is of Roy Halladay next to the words “Legends are Born in October.”

The implication is clear. Halladay becomes a legend by leading the Fightins’ to victory in the World Series. Probably pitching a no-hitter in the clinching game.

What I don’t understand is, why would Craig choose such a pro-Phillies image to lead off a post about the playoffs? What I understand even less is, why didn’t any of the resident Phillies fans pick up on this already?

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:35 PM

      I think we did…Doctober?

      • natstowngreg - Aug 19, 2011 at 4:51 PM

Yeah, got that. But no comments on Craig choosing that particular image? I’m disappointed in you guys.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 5:09 PM

We’ll make up for it by selling out Nationals Park.

  9. yournuts - Aug 20, 2011 at 9:40 AM

There’s only one Mr. October and that is “Reggie Jackson.”
