Report: Astros place Wandy Rodriguez, Brett Myers on waivers

The Astros have decided to see if anyone will bite on their two most expensive starters, as they placed both Wandy Rodriguez and Brett Myers on waivers, SI.com’s Jon Heyman reports.

The salaries make it possible neither will be claimed.  Rodriguez is owed $36 million from 2012-14, while Myers will make $11 million next year and then either $10 million or a $3 million buyout for 2013.

Despite the big contract, Rodriguez is the more attractive property of the two.  He’s 8-9 with a fine 3.50 ERA this season.  He has a 3.44 ERA and a 35/14 K/BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings since the All-Star break.

Myers is currently 3-12 with a 4.72 ERA.  He’s still going six innings every time out, but almost always while giving up three or four runs.  His last win came on June 17.

For what it’s worth, Heyman says Rodriguez is 10:1 to get claimed, while there’s no chance of Myers getting claimed.  Danny Knobler of CBS Sports said last week that Rodriguez would likely get claimed by an NL team.

Yankees or Phillies? I say Wandy to NY. Myers back to Philly.

    Blanton to Geno’s.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 7:40 PM

      NO MYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • bleedgreen - Aug 19, 2011 at 9:02 PM

Yeah do not want Myers back in Philly. He’s a scumbag.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 7:41 PM

But Blanton is probably in line at Jim’s on South Street, anyway.

    • pisano - Aug 20, 2011 at 1:14 AM

Won’t happen, Yanks don’t want his contract.

  2. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 9:15 PM

Any Phillies phans out there? Kendrick will take the mound when the game restarts…Oswalt will now go tomorrow. So, what are the odds Kendrick pitches well?

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:07 PM

So far, so good. Messers Lucky and Overrated strike again as Hernandez implodes.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:09 PM

Why the hell would Ibanez test JDub’s arm? They know he’s got that range.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:18 PM

I’m assuming that he doesn’t get sent if KK wasn’t on deck. He was out by 15 feet.

  3. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:19 PM

Giants are getting shut out again.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:20 PM

I can hear Fiorentino giggling like a schoolgirl—especially since he doesn’t have to root for the Bravos now.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:23 PM

Braves just won. He is overly concerned about the Giants. I know they beat us last year, but this team just can’t hit at all. It is becoming comical.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:26 PM

Sandoval is out with a shoulder strain.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:27 PM

Yeah, I saw that. They just don’t have any offense. The injuries to Posey and Freddy Sanchez really hurt them. Sanchez is an underrated player. Steady, consistent, two hole hitter.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:31 PM

I’d be more concerned with their pitching than their hitting. Timmah is damn near unhittable by the Phils. Cain is hittable, but not much scoring. And with the Phightins bats’ periodic habit of hibernation, that’s not a good combo.

      • FC - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:14 PM

Timmy has 10 starts with 0 run support. That’s how little I fear Giant’s pitching

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:03 PM

Valdez is mixing up his double plays now

  4. Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:33 PM

    And Valdez throws it away.

  5. Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:36 PM

Werth’s looking like he’s in over his head. But I’m okay with Pence. :)

  6. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:45 PM

Pence just fits in, you know?

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:53 PM

Any way NinJr. can rent Zimmerman for the rest of the year?

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:54 PM

Always liked that guy…Weird problems throwing though. Throws on the run great…lots of time equals problems.

  7. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 10:56 PM

Feel like KK is flirting with disaster here. Will Charlie give him another inning?

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:00 PM

After last night, and with the uncertainty about tomorrow, I say yes.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:04 PM

Definitely will now. It has to be Oswalt tomorrow right? They don’t have anybody else. I will look into that right now actually.

  8. Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:05 PM

    Let’s try this down here…

Valdez is mixing up his double plays now.

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:09 PM

Indeed. Chooch was cheating to try to score on that one. Nice play by Desmond. KK needs to get out of this inning.

  9. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:08 PM

Ok, no starters on the 40 man that can go tomorrow. Best AA starter Hyatt pitched tonight. No real options. I don’t know.

  10. Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:12 PM

I can’t stand Sarge—even less than your man Wheels.

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:15 PM

Not a Sarge fan either. His one redeeming thing was that he use to use some variation of “Cadillac Time” or Cadillacing. But he doesn’t do that anymore.

  11. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:16 PM

If anybody give any shit about turning this into a Phillies thread, it should be pointed out that the thread discussed Brett Myers. That is incidental enough to warrant this discussion.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:21 PM

I mentioned that on the Trout thread—four straight potential Phillies tie-ins, though the Brewers one was weak, with Randy Wolf. But SmackSaw was the first one to mention the Phils anyway.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:23 PM

‘Bicepts freaked out on SmackSaw earlier. There seems to be a history there.

  12. Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:17 PM

If KK gets out of this and they score in the 7th, I say he comes back out. Other than that, KK is done.

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:19 PM

I say they pinch hit for him to lead off the inning. Don’t know who they will bring in. Lidge was warming up.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:22 PM

I forgot that he was leading off. There was no chance he was staying in, then.

  13. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:18 PM

Well, KK flirts with disaster. However, good job by him tonight. 6 innings, 2 runs after getting a surprise start. Can’t argue with that.

  14. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:28 PM

It is Lidge time. Always interesting. Does this mean that Madson and Bastardo are available tonight? If they pitch tonight, they will surely be unavailable tomorrow.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:29 PM

Maybe one of them tonight, and the other one tomorrow. Stutes should be available tonight.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:31 PM

Well Lidge was super awesome….7 pitches. Does he come back out? I doubt it, but who knows. Charlie is backed into a corner.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:31 PM

Or maybe at least send Lidge out there to start the 8th.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:33 PM

I don’t know…2 lefties would be due up in Ankiel and Nix. We will see.

  15. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:34 PM

Well, it seems like it will be Bastardo time in the 8th. At least according to Wheels.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:43 PM

      I don’t like questioning Chuck, but…

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:45 PM

Unless he’s looking for two innings from Bastardo, that is.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:49 PM

Nice play by Rollins and stretch by Howard. Howard stretches well….under rated part of his defensive game. I don’t know about Bastardo for 2. He is due up 3rd in the 9th. Has he gone 2 full innings this year?

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:52 PM

Don’t think so, but I just can’t see using both Bastardo and MadDog tonight. But I’m a tad obsessive compulsive when it comes to that kind of stuff.

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:56 PM

Actually, he went two in that Lee crash and burn in Atlanta in April. He’s also gone 1.2 a couple times.

  16. Utley's Hair - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:48 PM

    Nice spin-n-throw by Rollins.

  17. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:52 PM

And Bastardo is just awesome. Yet another 1-2-3 inning with a pop up.

  18. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:57 PM

Madson warming up in the pen. Sets up an interesting situation tomorrow. I guess Lidge will be the closer and Stutes the set-up guy with Schwimmer the 7th inning guy if need by. Of course, no idea who will start.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:04 AM

Part of me expects Oswalt to start, and a roster move to bring up a reliever for a short term solution. But I’ve been wrong a few times already tonight.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:07 AM

I would also expect Oswalt to start. I think they will ok without bringing up anybody from the Iron Pigs assuming Oswalt does indeed start. Herndon should be available tomorrow too.

  19. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:59 PM

Now would be a good time to show that famed Ross Gload power.

    • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 19, 2011 at 11:59 PM

At least he didn’t strike out.

  20. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:08 AM

    Great at bat by Werth.

  21. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:10 AM

I have a bad feeling about this.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:12 AM

Ramos concerns me—at least tonight. Double play would be easier than with JDub

      • Utley's Hair - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:13 AM

        Crap.

  22. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:14 AM

If Madson catches that, it would have been a triple play.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:17 AM

A strikeout would be very nice right now

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:18 AM

He is having a hard time putting hitters away.

  23. Utley's Hair - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:15 AM

    Well, THAT was ugly.

  24. drmonkeyarmy - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:19 AM

    Shit. Flair after flair.

    • Utley's Hair - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:21 AM

      Third straight night for MadDog.

      • drmonkeyarmy - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:23 AM

He won’t be available for 2 days after this. You were right, should have stuck with Bastardo.

  25. Utley's Hair - Aug 20, 2011 at 12:23 AM

Two down. You can’t put him on.
