Alex Rodriguez is sitting out Tuesday’s game and will undergo X-rays on his left thumb after jamming it Sunday in his first game back from knee surgery.

Rodriguez said he hurt the thumb while fielding a grounder in the game against the Twins.  He was a late scratch tonight after cutting short his batting-practice session, though he said he would be available to pinch-hit.

A-Rod went 0-for-5 Sunday in his return.  In his absence tonight, the Yankees have Eric Chavez starting at third base and batting seventh.  Robinson Cano has moved into the cleanup spot.

UPDATE: According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Rodriguez is considered day-to-day after X-rays on his left thumb came back negative.
