This is a rather odd article. The Giants are averaging 15 unsold seats per game. The Yankees are selling 89% of their capacity; the Cubs 88%.

Disclaimers: There may be many no-shows. I’m not counting standing room as part of stadium capacity, but they obviously count in terms of tickets sold. The Phillies, Red Sox, and Twins average more than their capacities due to SROs.The Orioles, Jays, Marlins, and the first place Diamondbacks sell less than 50% of their capacities. I was in Phoenix yesterday evening and a 110 degrees of dry heat wouldn’t be an attractive atmosphere to take in a ballgame for me.

As a braves fan i can relate to relishing the demise of another franchise, but the san fransisco giants are a class organization…when they halted the NLDS championship celebrations last year to take a minute to recognize bobby cox on the field for his last game, i found confidence again that sportsmanship in this country still reigns supreme,you wont see that kind of respect from the florida marlins or ny mets…so i tend to believe the giants organization will again stand with its head held high dispite east coast media input…

Yeah, that’s why Craig linked the article…. Or maybe b/c Yankeesfanlen linked it to Craig, Craig read it, found it interesting, and then supplied us with his short take on it along with the NYT link. The Times doesn’t delve into baseball a ton, but when they do, Craig almost always links them from what I’ve noticed.

Also, to your idiotic point, the Braves played the Giants more closely than anyone in the playoffs last year so how did they choke? They got beat by a better team, that’s how I, and the world, see it.

Never said it was. You’re quick to assume that that was a dig at Yankees fans.

But you can’t really proclaim that the Yankees have a fan base that will stick through it all when the current fan base hasn’t gone trough prolonged droughts of terrible baseball. To be a fan base that “sticks through it all”, that fan base has to have experienced both sides of the coin. Grouping them in with fans from the Red Sox or Cubs really doesn’t fit the bill.

Buying increasingly over priced tickets just to go to the ball park when you can watch a game in high def in your livng room doesn’t make a fan base a bad one. Passion for and knowledge of your favorite team is much more important in my book.

where is it written that you are only a good fan if you are giving the team your money?

Locally, the uptick in interest is modest. Yes, there’s Wilson, the Showtime special, etc, but local fans do not impact that attention.

And, the Giants were filling seats post Bonds/pre-2010, much to the frustration of fans as the thought was as longs as they sell tickets there would be no incentive to boost the roster.

Considering losses to injury on both sides of the plate and the fact that the Giants are still favorites speaks loud and clear about the quality of team we have in SF.

Isn’t Wrigley half empty these days? Didn’t the Yankees have major problems filling the stadium after it was built? Mind you, I’m not trashing those fan bases but to just give a general statement that such and such fanbase sticks it out through it all is just plain wrong. Philsgamer is correct. You won’t really know how a fanbase like the Yankees would react if they had to go through a long stretch of fultility. again, they couldn’t sell tickets in the last couple years when they are winning. how about the Dodgers fans finally not showing up? Bottom l,ine is that Craig was right. If you put a quality and winning product out there, most fanbases will show up. If you lose for a while they will go away.

It’s tough to group Yanks fans in with those others that you claim have fan bases that stick through it all. Simple because they enjoy so much success that it makes it difficult to judge what they would do as a fan base if the Yanks went through decades of ineptitude.

First this is an article about a west coast team from an east coast newspaper so take it with a grain of salt. The stands have been packed during good and lean years. Giants fans are a dedicated bunch, just look in the stands during road trips and see how many Giants fans are crowd, there is always plenty orange and black to be seen. The injury bug may have some singing the blues but I really don’t know where this “sense of entitlement” comes from. Seems to me in the bar conversations I hear, we knew last year, the team was flawed, but damn if they were not fun to cheer for, and going into this year more of the same. No one I know thinks Sabes is the end all be all of GM’s that’s for sure but that doesn’t stop us from supporting the guys on the field. And we are well aware of the studly young rotation and solid bullpen we have, and yes would like to see some better bats and contracts in the line up. Giants fans are well aware of the reality of our team and we still love them. Go Giants!

There’s nothing wrong with Giants fans. We’ve never been fair-weather fans in the past and we won’t be in the future. We had sold-out games last year when we were in 4th place just like we had them when we were in first place. Sorry fellows. Go get your headlines somewhere else. You’re not going to find them with disgruntled fans at AT&T Park. Personally? I’ll be able to rest at peace with the laurels of the 2010 World Champions if they never go to another playoff. Once a Giants fan, always a Giants fan!

I find it very odd that you post about how the “honeymoon is over between San Francisco and the Giants”, when they have a pretty lengthy consecutive sell-out streak going this year. Although the team isn’t nearly playing as well as they did towards the end of the season (mainly due to weaker play and injuries to Panda(earlier), Posey, and Sanchez), they are in the thick of things in the weak West. They’re a game out of first for heaven’s sake.
You obviously haven’t been to a game and sat in the stands to witness the fanbase and how they react to the team. It’s pretty positive.
I’m sure there are about 21 teams in the league right now that wishes they were in the position that the Giants are….which is a legitimate shot at making the playoffs again.

New flash: all of the actual bad teams’ fans dislike these type of smug, we’ve-won-so-where’s-our-repeat-title, pretentious fans. I feel most badly for the Royals fans, who are generally a good lot that keep things in perspective. Winning teams always end up with sore-winner fans, I suppose.

Of course, that South Park with the “smug cloud” all began in SF, so perhaps SF started the whole damn thing a long time ago…

How silly. They are a game behind the D-Backs and have one of the three best starting rotations in baseball. Woe is us. In two weeks, they will be 4 games up in the division the way the D-Backs are coming back to earth.
