UPDATE II:  Now Rosenthal is saying that the Rockies have claimed Rodriguez. If they and the Astros are to get a deal done, they have to do it by Thursday at noon.

UPDATE: Rosenthal reports that, contra Olney, it was not the Nationals who claimed Rodriguez. The team is still unknown.  So we have it: MYSTERY TEAM!

3:02 PMKen Rosenthal reported a few minutes ago that Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez was claimed on waivers, but by whom it was unknown.  Just as I was getting all excited to do a post about a “mystery team,” Buster Olney reported that it was probably the Washington Nationals claiming him.

The Nationals could certainly convince themselves that they’ll be in contention over the next couple of years, so it may very well convince them to take on Rodriguez and the $36 million he’s owed between now and 2014.  The Astros, of course, aren’t just gonna let him go without getting something in return, one presumes, so it’s not just a matter of letting Rodriguez walk.

But unlike a lot of guys who are put on waivers, it’s not nuts to think that Rodriguez could be moved.

D-Backs needed middle infield help. Hill is locked up with options but McDonald will be a free agent after this season.

They is no way the Nationals claimed him. They have two minor league pitchers they want to see in September, not to mention Strasburg coming back for 5 September starts. Even with Jordon Zimmermann being shut down; they want to see more starts from Wang. No way they would risk that contract just being out on then. No chance.

If the Nats could run out a rotation of Rodriguez, Strasburg, Zimmermann and some combination of Wang/Lannan/Detwiler/Hernandez/Peacock/Free Agent Acquisition and then get healthy, productive seasons out of Zimmerman, LaRoche, Morse, Espinosa, Desmond, Werth, Ramos, maybe Harper and any free agent they toss some cash at…they could be pretty legit.

    …they might also suck.

I really don’t think he made it to the AL. His price tag is a little high, but he is good and has great enough K numbers to be reasonable for someone that doesn’t mind spending $13 million a year on a pitcher.

Mystery Team? Scott Boras claimed Wandy.

Would love to see the Cardinals claim him…actually.

Wandy was one of those pitchers that I didn’t want to see as the starting pitcher when I tuned in for the game. I bet Dunc could help him out a bit.
